Description

The Tycho-Class is a robust workhorse for all Starfleet Branches, a versatile and highly modifiable vessel for the transportation of delicate, volatile, and high-security cargo. Serving everywhere from Sector 001 to the outermost fringes of Federation space, vessels of this class can be found virtually anywhere, where Starfleet has gone before.

General Information
By integrating a large shuttle-bay directly into the primary hull, the designers of the Tycho-Class created an expansive cargo hold, which is extended into the main saucer section. Several internal module slots, visible on the outer hull as larger, darker plating, allow for extensive modification of this internal space to suit the varying needs of different branches and divisions operating the vessel. The minimized secondary hull still houses sensor equipment, the deflector dish, and part of the warp-drive system, but has otherwise been stripped down to streamline the design.

Internally, the Tycho-Class notably features enhanced environmental control- and life-support systems, making it also a very suitable transport for exotic life-forms relying on specially adapted gravity, atmospheres, and temperatures.

Mission Profile
Depending on the operating branch, the mission profile of the Tycho-Class can vary wildly, but typically encompasses transport- and courier duties.

Starfleet's Research and Development branch regularly employs Tycho-Class vessels as testbeds for new secondary systems and technology applications, as well as for the transportation of sensitive equipment.
Similarly, the Science and Exploration branch makes use of the Tycho-Class as a transport when shipping samples of volatile biological compounds, elements, and even creatures. At times, Science and Exploration will also lend vessels of the class to independent science projects and organizations, who can easily slot in their equipment and entire laboratories in the Tycho's modular interior structure.

To both the Administrative branch and the Strategic Branches of Starfleet, the vessel primarily serves as a courier carrying sensitive information and personnel. On some occasions, it was even utilized as a specialized unit carrier for the rapid deployment of Starfleet personnel to crisis areas.

Class History
Similarly to the Dronmari-Class, the Tycho-Class fulfills a role that was previously filled mostly by older Starfleet vessels at the end of their lifespan, who underwent extensive refits to make them suitable for service as higher-end transport vessels.
Even before the Dominion War, Starfleet command had set its eyes on extensive reforms in that department, aiming for the production of more advanced and specialized vessels that would both fulfill these duties more effectively and also carry far more prestige. In the decades leading up to the 2370s, Starfleet had gained somewhat of a reputation for utilizing a vast fleet of elderly vessels and even been accused of sentimental attachment to older designs. The introduction of a new generation of starships such as the Tycho-Class would renew the image of Starfleet as an organization utilizing cutting-edge technology.
