The trip across the desert was largely uneventful.

Xenia was, indeed, a guide, and a very good one at that. Not only did she know where all of the oases were located along the way, but she also knew where brigands and other unsavory types tended to congregate. Xenia detoured around the worst areas, no doubt saving them from having to deal with all manner of trouble.

Dakota’s companion was also surprisingly well-versed in ancient history. She pointed out a number of ruins along their route as they traveled along.

“Do you see that rocky outcrop over to the southwest,” Xenia asked one day, pointing toward the horizon as her camel trotted along. “During the Ptolemaic dynasty, there was a watering hole just beyond that ridge. Quite a prosperous little settlement had built up around it, serving the caravans that passed through the area. It dried up a few decades after the Romans conquered Egypt…”

Dakota squinted in that direction. “You certainly know your local history.”

Xenia chuckled. “I have worked for a lot of archeologists over the years,” she declared with a self-deprecating grin. “I guess some of it rubbed off.”

Dakota smiled over at her. “You know, with a little training, you would make a fine archeologist in your own right.”
Xenia shrugged off the suggestion. “I don’t have the patience for book learning; I’ve always been more of a… woman of action.”
