Description

Veronica was having a blast at the convention.

She and her friends had decided to go all out and cosplay as their D&D characters. Well, at least as far as costumes went. Her character, Valarie Thieliescon, was a Sea Elf warlock; she had gone so far as to apply some prosthetic elf ears, but didn’t feel like painting her entire body blue.

“So, what’s the plan?” asked Jerome, decked out in a convincing set of armor he had made for his human paladin, Thordon Dorkolot.

“The Eternal Nerds’ booth is showing off their new line of figurines,” said the redhead Callie, dressed in the stylish attire of her Dark Elf bard. She hadn’t bothered to wear any elf ears, however.

“Excuse me?” interjected a short blonde girl clad in one of the black tee shirts worn by convention staff. “I have a message for your group?” She held up an envelope.

Triss, the sister-in-law of Veronica’s half-brother, Kyle, accepted the letter and opened it. She frowned as she read the contents. “It’s an invitation to participate in a D&D session…”

“Who’s it from?” Veronica asked.

“Crystal.”

That news took everyone by surprise. Crystal used to DM D&D campaigns with them. They had a falling out a couple years back, and none of them had much contact with her after that. She was kind of domineering, and had a tendency to get nasty when people didn’t do what she wanted.

“Is that supposed to be some kind of joke?” asked Abigail, Veronica’s step-sister. That was pretty much Veronica’s initial reaction as well.
