Another startled shout drew Veronica’s attention to her friends across the table.

Rachel was shrinking again; this time, Jerome and Elizabeth were shrinking, too. As they got smaller, their skin and clothing began to lose color, taking on a grayish hue. They each held weapons in their hands, appropriate to their respective character classes.

As Veronica looked on, the shock and horror faded from their faces, to be replaced with expressions of smug confidence. They each adopted a sort of action pose, holding their weapons at the ready as if preparing to head into battle.

Then they shrank below the top of the table, and Veronica could not see them anymore.

Scared by the prospect of what she might see, Veronica leaned down to look under the table. They continued to shrink. Their bodies and clothing were entirely gray… in fact, they looked like plastic. Flattened disks had formed beneath their feet.

They stopped shrinking at less than three inches tall, by Veronica’s rough estimate. She knew exactly what her friends had become. There were hundreds of others just like them for sale in booths down on the convention floor.

They were now D&D figurines.
