Why did transmogrification have to be so blasted inscrutable?!

Kella had been wading through these books for hours, and she still couldn't quite wrap her head around some of the more esoteric applications of transmogrification magic. Destruction magic was easy; you simply tear the fabric of reality asunder and unleash elemental fury upon your enemies, reducing them to their component atoms.

Transmogrification required that you not only reduce a person or object to its component atoms, but that you then recombine them into something exciting and new. That was anything but easy.

The problem was, Kella had a midterm coming up in Professor Grey's Applied Transmogrification class. She absolutely had to get at least a B- on that exam, or she was in danger of failing the course, having already earned a D on the first exam, and neglecting to turn in one written assignment. She had spent a little too much time engaged in "extracurricular" activities as a member of House Lancedor.

The Lancedors had a reputation for derring-do, and often ventured forth on field trips to perform heroic deeds, such as vanquishing malevolent witch covens or slaying predatory basilisks. Ordinarily, failing one course would amount to little more than a minor blemish on a student's academic record – and any student could always retake a course later.

Yet she was not just any student; she was Kellanine Annara Dalyrimple! Not one, but three Dalyrimples had served as headmaster of Boarfort's Magical Academy since its founding centuries ago. Failing a course simply was not an outcome that Kella could countenance!

"Oh, my! It's longer than I expected!"
