Kella blinked slowly. "You are in Professor Grey's Applied Transmogrification class?"

The Hissteryn girl shrugged. "I usually sit in the back… that's probably why you haven't noticed me. I'm Daya Lu'Lauveloo." She extended her hand.

Kella deigned to shake the proffered hand. "Kellanine Annara Dalyrimple."

"Oh, I know who you are!" the girl declared cheerfully. "Your family is rather famous, of course!"

"Quite," Kella replied with a supercilious lift of her chin. "I'm afraid the name Lu'Lauveloo doesn't ring any bells, however."

"Oh, it's quite a well-known surname up in Diregarden – that's where I'm from."

Kella smirked. "That backwater? No wonder I've never heard of your family."

Daya frowned. "A lot of powerful mages have been born in Diregarden – like Thariya the Dark, and Alyssendra the Knowing!"

Kella rolled her eyes. "That was centuries ago! Besides, everyone knows their powers were overrated."

Scowling, the girl opened her mouth to say something, but then seemed to think better of it. She smiled and said, "Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, I suppose. May I have the book, or not?"

Kella tipped her head one side and feigned an apologetic smile. "Sorry, I'm not finished with it yet." Then she leaned forward and lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "If I may offer a word of advice?"

Daya leaned forward eagerly. "Of course!"
