Description
Had a pretty strong storm roll through the area tonight. Figured it was a great time to break out the camera and test my luck at getting some lightning. I haven't had much luck capturing lightning for various reasons, mainly due to the fact that there is so much stuff around its often difficult to actually see the sky. Oh yea, and the fact that I'm not trying to get struck by lightning. Incidentally about 3 minutes after this shot was taken, lightning struck just down the street and we rushed inside.Although this was a long exposure, all these actual bolts occured within a second of each other, was kind of crazy.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this up. Exposure was done on the fly and I didnt really have too much choice for composition (wasnt trying to sit outside while a storm passed overhead, so I was understandably right next to the back door of the house)

It is shots like that, the spontaneous ones I mean, that end up coming out well. I have sat and planned many a shot that was a crock of s*** afterwards, whereas a quick "snapshot" has more often than not been more than acceptable.
Congrats on the shot, itΒ΄s a great one!

I've tried several times to capture lightening without success. This is a wonderful shot!

Thanks so much! I think it involves a lot of luck, mainly being at a good location to actually be able to see the bolts of lightning. Beyond that, a tripod and a long exposure are all you need!

I haven't learned to do the long exposures yet. Just learning how to use my camera manually.

Ahh, well, learning the long exposures will open up a new world for you, first to achieve some cool effects, then to do some great night time photography.

Yea, turned out to be riskier than I thought, but no harm done. Thanks!
