Description
The second of 5-7 images for the "Extraction" comic, to be produced as part of my Drawing 500 class. This character is based on my friend and gaming partner Keith. His appearance is an amalgamation of "Solid Snake" and "Sam Fisher". It reflects his play style's STRENGTHS a bit more than his preferences, making him a Scout or in this project, the Pointman.
Character name: "Capt." or "Keltcher" or "Captain Brian C. Keltcher"
Based on: My friend Keith
Rank: Captain
Role: Sharpshooter
Position: Scout or Pointman (Front)
EQUIPMENT:
Armor: 2nd Gen Sneaking Suit with a Level III Body Armor Vest. (All gear is sealed and waterproof.)
Primary Weapon: FN P90 SMG
-Shoulder strap, Holographic Reflex scope, IR Laser sight, Lamp-
[ 3x 50rd Clips 5.7x28mm Armor Piercing]
Secondary Weapon: 6in. Dive Knife
Sidearm: Mk.23 SOCOM
-Prototype LAM unit, Silencer-
[3x 12rd Clips .45 ACP Armor Piercing]
Other:
[1x Flashbang, 1x Smoke Grenade] [2x C4 Charges] [1x Small Med Pack] [Snake Cam] [Throat Radio] [Advanced NVGs] [OPSAT Sub]
REFERENCES AND NOTES:
Sneaking Suit and SOCOM
Both of these items are directly referencing Solid Snake as seen in Metal Gear Solid. The sneaking suit itself is as old as the ninja, and there are newer versions that utilise recent tech advances. But the version seen here is just doing away with any pretense to modify a proven working model. The Mk.23 SOCOM is a real weapon in wide spread use. The silencer is also a common model but the Prototype LAM is the kicker. This unit never went in to mass production, though we have seen a proliferation of imitation models for airsoft replicas. For me it is the most mechanically and aesthetically pleasing attachment I have seen yet.
NVGs and Dive Knife
These are a direct reference to Sam Fisher from the Splinter Cell series, because Keith LOVES Sam. The dive knife is used more as a reference of Sam, but it also supports the characters amphibious role. The goggles however are formally and functionally awesome. This particular design is pulled from a similar derivitive item seen on GAIA. I have not yet seen a set of NVG goggles that are this compact, but they are getting smaller. The 3-dot look however, is very common, Sam Fisher aside.

Pretty artwork btw.
(after all my criticism, I wanted to make mention that it is artisticly very nice.)

Oh, one other thing, for realism:
A Captain who lacks good judgement wouldn't be a captain for long (if he even got there in the first place.)
Secondly, a captain that EVER disobey's a direct lawful order, would either be dishonarably discharged, or locked away in Fort Levinworth military prison.
(An exception could be made if the leadership gave a really bad order, and the officer disobeyed an order to protect his men's lives. But frequent disobedence would result, at a minimum, in a court martial. And if the court marial found him guilty of repeated direct disobedence, then he would get a dishonerable discharge, or worse. Dishonorable discharge puts a permanent criminal record on the person's civilian life, btw.)

I'm going to say it one more time, he's a captain because that's the nickname he's chosen for himself.
And the disobeying orders is me stabbing at my friend and his personality.
These bios are a gag and will not likely survive to the final product.
Though that is good info, and I intend to rub that in his nose the next time he runs off and gets me shot.

"Though that is good info, and I intend to rub that in his nose the next time he runs off and gets me shot." That's awsome! I'm glad to hear it!

Can I make a suggestion?
Civilian personnel who write military fiction seem to be facinated with officers, and only use officers as primary characters. Please don't fall into this trap. If you are planning on making more characters for this comic, remember that very VERY few actual spec-ops are officers. Most officers are managers, even the spec ops officers tend to be managers for their units. They do things like policy planning, unit acquisitions, (filling the paperwork for supplies.)
That doesn't mean that officers are never seen on the field, but you'd almost never see a major in the field.
2nd Lt. 1st Lt and Capt. are called field-grade officers, bcause they are the ranks typically in combat. Maj. LtCol. and Col. are called company-grade officers, becasue they run the management of the unit, and above that are general officers, so called because they manage things on a very broad and general sense. (I'm not kidding you, it's the actual reason they're called "general.")
Could you have a captain as a sharpshooter? Sure you could, but he would have been prior enlisted. (meaning an Private, Corperal, Seaman, Airman, Petty Officer, or Sergeant.)
Could he still act as a sharpshooter as an officer? Not likely, but possible: Meaning he'd have to be a very special troop, which this guy is clearly supposed to be.
Please just keep in mind that that the TV shows get it VERY wrong showing the officers as though they are the primary fighters, and it's insulting to the enlistedmen who really do the work in real-life.
It's the Seargants who get things done. An experienced Sergeant can make a Leutenant's life a living hell if the Lt. ignores the more experienced Sergeant. (Even though the Lt is higher ranking, people will listen to the seasoned sergeant over a leutenant, including the upper-level officers.)
I don't know why, but there seems to be a stigma against using enlisted as primary characters. But enlisted personnel are the vast majority of the military, and the part that actually gets things done, please don't loose sight of that.
Thanks,
- Emily Smith
(Yes, I was enlisted for a time in the military.)

Ok, half of that I did know, the other half I did not, so thank you, there was some useful information here.
But again, it seems you're missing a primary aspect of this story, which is it's members work for a PMC (Private Military Contractor).
So, while everything you say makes perfect sense for enlisted military, it doesn't fully apply to the private sector (though I am still struggling with research into PMCs).
Now, in another story concept, I had soldiers operating in Darfur, but that idea was scrapped for this.
And again, the ranks here were chosen as a private joke between me and the people I know.
And if the rank assignment is all that bothers you, then relax, it's an arbitrary detail.

The lighting I think I'm still wrestling with, but those details were pretty fun. It's almost too bad that a lot gets drowned out.

Yeah.. details are the fun parts of making art. Kills your hand/wrist sometimes, but still fun. Unfortunately, there is a constant struggle between dramatic shading and details. Really hard to have both. At least in my own experiences. Personally, I think the lighting is great and compliments the content of the whole piece very well.

Fantastic work, Young Master! One of the things I have noticed with your work ... something a lot of us need to work on out there ... is the lighting used within the image. Splendid work!

Well, the intense use of shadows to really pump up the atmosphere in the picture.
