◄ PREVIOUS: Gentle Hands Part 1 | NEXT: A Hitchhiker ►
After spending a sleepless night in the pen with Skylark, Sparrow was growing worried. He could hear the strange creaturess rustling about as the sun began to rise. Horses neighed and snorted all around him, some that smelled wild- like he and Sky -and others who bore the scent of the two-legged creatures. He heard the voices rise again until suddenly the same creature that had been riding the bay popped his head over the fence to peak in at him and his gray mare. All thoughts of his past life were gone and Sparrow could only think of the here and now. He felt a sense of protection for Skylark, and seeing how she clinged to his side, fearful for the first time since knowing her, he knew he had to put everything aside and focus on getting them out of there, or at the very least, staying together. As he was about to voice his ideas, a clink caught their attention. Suddenly, one of the sides of the pen swung open.
Behind them, a creature had climbed the fence, armed with a stick that had some sort of noisy ball at the end. They swung it around toward Sparrow and the sight spooked him enough to get moving. He tried to steer Skylark toward the opening in the fence, but another human with the same type of stick stuck it between them. A cloud of dust and dirt sprung up as the two horses tried desperately to get back to one another, but before he knew it, Sparrow had spun around so many times that he ended up inside a strange chute. When he tried to back up toward the way he came, his rump hit the fence and he bucked, but the space was too small for him to move much.
”Sparrow!” Skylark cried from behind him; she was still in the pen.
”I’m here!” He tried to assure her, though he was having enough trouble keeping his own emotions in check. His eyes darted around to either side, seeing the creatures close in on him. However, they had done away with the sticks. The one that had ridden the bay came up beside him, speaking softly. He had something in his hands, though Sparrow could scarcely care what he was holding. The fact that he was getting so close was enough to make Sparrow try and jump out. But as the creature reached out, they locked eyes. Something about the way he looked at him calmed him. He stopped struggling and stilled, but remained tense.
The champagne stallion squished himself against the far side of the chute, but the creature continued to stretch out his hand toward him. Ever so gently, the creature began to rub something into Sparrow’s wound. He jumped at the touch, but allowed him to continue. Perhaps the sooner it was over, the sooner he could figure out how to get back to Skylark.
”Are you okay? I can’t see you!” Skylark called again. He could hear the terror in her voice.
”I’m okay. I’m gonna come back to you, I promise!” Sparrow answered her. When he tuned back into the creature, he had already finished. Now there was a smooth, but sticky substance covering his wounds. Just like that, another creature hopped onto the fence and began swinging the stick again. Sparrow squealed and backed up, but instead of hitting the fence, he was back in the pen with Skylark. She was at his side in an instant, oblivious to his bewilderment at what had just happened.
”What did they do? Are you hurt?” Sky demanded, checking him all over.
”I’m fine. They put something on my side…” Sparrow was still confused, his voice trailed off in thought.
”It’s medicine!” A voice called suddenly. Sky and Sparrow jumped and looked up; the bay was peaking over the fence again. ”I forgot to tell you yesterday, but my name’s Chip. And that there is medicine, for your wound.”
”Medicine..?” Sparrow pondered. It made sense, honestly.
”Yep. That’s why they caught y’all. Saw that big gash on your shoulder and they wanted to help heal it up.” Chip continued. Skylark and Sparrow exchanged glances. Seemed like a pretty traumatic experience for just medicine.
”How can we be sure you’re not lying, and this is something else?” The gray mare questioned. Chip seemed surprised, like he hadn’t thought they’d distrust him.
”Oh. Well, hm.” He thought about it for a moment. ”Okay, if they don’t let you go in the next few days, then you can call me a liar. How ‘bout that?” He proposed. Skylark and Sparrowhawk looked at one another again, before Sparrow answered him.
”Alright.”
