Name: Anyu (Inuit, meaning “snow used for a specific purpose”)
Age: 5 years
Gender: Female
Breed: Greenland dog (father) x Siberian Husky/Canadian Inuit dog (mother)
Height: 24.5 inches at her withers
Weight: 75 lbs
Build: Taking mostly after her Greenland and Inuit dog heritage, Anyu is solidly built, with sturdy legs and a long thin body. Because of her husky heritage, she has an undercoat, making her fur thick which causes her to seem larger than she actually is. She has a square muzzle and small, square paws with ears that stand erect and alert. Anyu’s eyes are both striking in appearance and shape, as they have a very Egyptian look about them; they are the most feminine thing about her and are often marveled by humans and dogs alike. Despite Anyu’s smaller size, she’s impeccably strong; underneath the thick fluffy coat of hers is a toned and muscled body.
Accessories: Anyu has one accessory, and that is her harness. It is like any other harness that Inuit dogs wear. However, the fur around the neckline is made of Polar Bear fur, from which she and her previous owner fought and killed together in her early years of training.

Handler: Anyu’s handler, Sitka, is a gentle giant of sorts. He’s one of the tallest men in the tribe- or perhaps even the tallest! Having grown up and become devoted to the lifestyle of the Illamar, Sitka believes whole-heartedly that animas are to be treated with respect and kindness, just as he believes that all humans should be as well. This is what drew him to Anyu, who had been born into the abusive ways of the Ikkuma. Sitka is not a fighter, but he will if he has to. He would rather solve disputes with words of wisdom and understanding rather than bitterness and anger. He is patient beyond belief, willing to wait even years for something that he wants.

Devoted: Although her Ikkuman owner was cruel and only saw Anyu as a tool or toy rather than a companion, Anyu was hopelessly devoted to him. She would’ve jumped off the side of a glacier if he had asked her too. Even now that she belongs to an Illamarian man, she feels even more devoted to him. She doesn’t understand why she was traded, but his love and patience with her has taught her a new perspective on respect. She isn’t one to talk back or misbehave around her owner, believing whole-heartedly that they deserve the utmost respect and attention.

Practical: Anyu does not like intricacy. She believes that life should be simple, black and white, at all times. She doesn’t dwell on nonsense and will complete a task with as little complexity as possible. However, this doesn’t mean that she won’t do complex things. However, her definition of complex is quite different than everyone else’s idea of complex.

Realistic: Much like her practical nature, Anyu is very realistic. She has a hard time believing in the spirits and, although she wants to believe that there is both good and evil in the world, she can’t help but think that everyone is overthinking things. She likes to live in the here and now instead of dwelling on the past or the future.

Organized: Anyu’s mind works much like a filing cabinet; all of the information is carefully placed in a sub folder genre, ready to be picked up and used again at a later date. She hates chaos and strives for a strict schedule that she will never deviate from, unless her owner demands it. Anyu believes that those who do not follow a schedule are lazy and foolish.

Combative: Although Anyu does not seek out fights, she isn’t one to run away from them either. If a dog or other animal decides to attack her, she will defend herself. She also doesn’t like to be argued with. If someone tries to challenge her views or tell her to do something that is against her beliefs or what her human has already told her to do, she won’t hesitate to hit you with a barrage of verbal uppercuts. However, this is only with other animals, and humans that are not her owner or direct friends of her owner.

Aloof: Because she spent much of her life in the Ikkuma, Anyu feels very alone in the Illamar tribe. Aside from her human, she does not feel like she belongs and seeks solitude more often than not. Not that she doesn’t want to be social, she just needs time to cope with the sudden changes and culture shift. (this may change later on!)

Apathetic: Anyu isn’t one to jump up and down at good news. She’s very serious and although she will smile now and then, more often than not she has a very stone-faced exterior, always business like in every aspect of her life. She has a hard time caring about others and their feelings as the instinctual behavior to has been trained out of her. It’s not that she wants to be unfeeling, but she doesn’t know how else to be. Acts of kindness and love are foreign to her and sometimes it makes her uncomfortable.

Insecure: A part of her which is hidden well, Anyu is terribly insecure about herself. Because of her past punishments, she feels like she should always be headed in the direction of improvement and her past owner had caused her to feel like she could never be good enough. She doesn’t much care about her appearance, but she believes she needs to be the best of the best to truly please her owner.

Candid: Typically when speaking to Anyu, she’s rather unbiased and frank with her speech. Having little to no real friends in Illamar, she doesn’t feel like she owes compliments to anyone and instead will be as honest as she can be. She doesn’t know the difference between honesty and rudeness, so what she says may seem rather cruel sometimes. (This directly ties into her apathetic characteristic.)

Being reared up in the ways of the Ikkuma has engrained into her mind that a dog’s purpose in life is to simply obey their human’s commands. Because of this, Anyu will always seek out her owner’s approval, no matter what she’s doing. However, now that she lives in the Illamar tribe, her duties are slacker and her punishments are little to none. She doesn’t understand it fully, but now she’s finally beginning to see that life isn’t all about taking orders and staying on task, but she can’t seem to figure out what else to do.

Unlike her brother’s parents, her mother was of a gentler sort, which passed down to Anyu. She wasn’t a softy by any means, but she wasn’t pulling at the chain or nipping at her handlers all the time either. Instead, she responded well to discipline. However, when it came time to receive a proper owner, a middle-aged man with a husky voice and snow-white hair stepped up immediately to claim Anyu for himself. His name was Kilalurak and he had owned several other dogs in his life. In fact, he still owned some, many of which were older and better trained. He was attracted to her different colored eyes and wanted to her for his rare dog collection. He taught Anyu the ways in which he and his dogs worked, but she didn’t take well to it at first. Any small slip up and he would punish her for it. Kilalurak’s other dogs were no help either. He would constantly use them as punishment tools, letting them beat up on her when she disobeyed or overstepped her boundaries.

Life was rough for Anyu. Because of the constant punishment and lack of compassion or praise from Kilalurak and his dogs, she became stoic, obedient, and unfeeling dog. She frowned upon fun and games and instead focused on becoming the best of the best, with the ever present fear of punishment in the back of her mind if she failed. There was only one instance in which Kilakurak had given praise to her; a small female polar bear had wandered its way too close to the homes of the Ikkuma and Kilakurak brought Anyu with him to get rid of it. She fought bravely and together they had killed it successfully. His gift to her was a new harness, fastened from the hide of the bear and the fur used as a cushion around her chest and shoulders.

When she turned 3 years old, she began to accompany Kilalurak on his exchanges with the other tribes. On one of these exchanges, they packed up the sled with food, blubber, and bones, hitched up and rode out to the meeting point. When they got there, they were met with an Illamarian man by the name of Sitka. He and Kilakurak discussed payment for a while, seeming to argue. Anyu didn’t pay much attention, but when Sitka pointed at her and said her name, she perked up, now interested. Sitka was trying to persuade Kilakurak to trade Anyu for the goods he had brought. It took quite a bit of arguing, but finally, Kilakurak reluctantly unhooked Anyu. She didn’t understand what was going on at first causing her to whine and pull back toward Kilakurak’s sled. Becoming angrier, Kilakurak raised his hand to hit Anyu, but Sitka stepped in and caught his arm. He merely took Anyu by the collar and gently tugged her to his sled. He let her sit in the sled instead of hooking her up with the other dogs as they drove back to Illamar. Anyu was dumbstruck the entire way to the Illamar tribe.

And dumbstruck Anyu would say for quite some time. Since that day, her whole world had turned upside down. Punishments were few and far between and nowhere near as harsh as Kilakurak’s had been. Usually, it was a stern scolding even though she anticipated a hit or a kick. Sitka was gentle with her and because of this she was uncomfortable and uneasy around him for about a year. She didn’t understand this odd behavior; she wasn’t used to being treated with kindness. It broke Sitka’s heart and he devoted himself to rehabilitating her. By the time she was 5 years old, she was comfortable around him, though she still had a long way to go before she could be called a proper Illamarian companion dog.
