Description β€œBlowout: Defective Model”
Over the years, Hasbro has used several Megatron toys as the basis for new characters (with varying degrees of redeco ing). The most well-known of these is Megaplex , the winged robot in the upper left. He was released in the Machine Wars line, and his packaging bio explained that he was Megatron's "decoy." This idea actually goes back to the heyday of Generation 1 , when small monochrome rubber figures of various Transformers were included with the standard toys as a promotion . They were also called "decoys," and naturally there was one of Megatron .

Rounding out the group is Archforce from Generation 2 , who looks nearly identical to Hero Megatron because he was simply the European release of that toy. His packaging bio was basically Megatron-ish, but no acknowledgement was given for his uncanny resemblance. G2 also gave us Blowout , whose toy is just Go-Bot Megatron cast in translucent plastic. This resemblance was likewise left unexplained , though his gun's ability to "draw energy from distant stars" sounds a bit like Megatron's ability to "connect [his] cannon interdimensionally with a black hole, where it can draw on anti-matter as its power source. " Thing is... Blowout is an Autobot!

My own explanation for all this is that these characters are indeed Megatron clones, but for some reason Blowout's programming went awry, and he wants to switch sides.

Now... knowing all that, bonus points to anyone who can name the three Autobots he's headed towards! Well! ~fourth-heir figured that one out pretty quickly. Good job! The three Autobots are, from top to bottom, Thunder Clash , G2 Sureshot , and Firecracker ... all Optimus Prime doppelgangers. I don't think they're "decoys," since that doesn't seem like Optimus's style, but maybe there's been a Primus apotheosis outbreak.

I don't see the resemblance with firecracker but I am equally sad confused that you didn't include idw Pyro.

Oh well.

XD

Firecracker's toy is the same mold as G2 Gobot Optimus, just as Blowout and Megatron are the same. I didn't include Pyro because I was sticking with toy redecoes, and the Pyro mold was never used for Optimus. I hope you're less confused now, though I won't presume to have cured your sadness!

Makes sense. I was speaking more along the lines of Primus Apotheosis. XDΒ

Hello, Really fantastic explaination of where these Megatron clones and optimus clones came fro. I was already aware of Archforce, since he was a purple versin of megatrons generation 2 form, and later he was explained away as the Lord Straxxus personality Megatron clone rebuilt, which i thought was interesting!: )

The painting is fantastic, full of energy. and great job with all the links!

Thank you! I'm glad the story elements resonated with you. But when was Archforce given that backstory? I didn't know he had any fiction outside of his toy bio.

it was a long while ago, but James roberts, the current TF writer for IDW, he wrote a book that was non canon (as far as i know) featuring quite afew characters from the marvel TF series. so yah it wasn't reall a toy bio, was just a pretty nifty fan fiction

Ah, Eugenesis. Never did read that. Man, it'd be awesome if Roberts brought some of that Archforce-love into MTMTE... though there isn't quite as handy an explanation for his existence just lying around like in the UK continuity...

Not sure if it is mentioned, but Prime doesn't have decoys; they just all suffer from: [link]

Yeah, it did come up... I probably ought to put it in the description. By the way, kudos for slogging your way through that! I think it says something for my art if it can make someone interested enough to read through one of my hyperdetailed trivia dumps.

Love all these studies you do on variants and new versions of the characters, not just by the amazing art but also for the great ideas behind them.
As for Optimus' decoys, maybe these are some kind of drones in this pic; Optimus would't send other living guys to do his job, but if they are sorta like Roller, they'd be extensions of himself.

Thank you! And I have to say, props back at you for the same reason. The TLS project has some good talent behind it, and I like the little stories you've cooked up.

The idea of Prime having a squad of Roller-types isn't a bad idea... certainly Apex Bomber was a step in that direction. Though I wouldn't want to negate the personalities that Thunder Clash, Sureshot, and Firecracker's bios have established for them. Maybe they all just suffer from Primus apotheosis ?

Hee hee, thank you! One of the big reasons I've always loved TF is that there are so many dark corners and forgotten corridors to explore. The world is so much bigger than the cartoons and comics can ever contain. And I tend to stick with just G1 and its spinoffs! Take the whole multiverse into account, and the rabbit-holes of obscurity you can go down are practically endless. If my art can help people appreciate something they'd never thought of before and walk away knowing a bit more TF arcana, then I feel like I've succeeded.

One of them is either Hero Optimus or Sureshot, depending on if you're European enough. I would guess the bottom one is also the Gobots Optimus, because his gun looks like a Gobot's. No clue for the one up top.

Really dynamic image. And as always I'm in awe of your ideas that bring the obscure characters to life.

Good guesses - ~fourth-heir got it first, but you were definitely on the right track.

Thank you for the kind words, as always. I'm glad my ideas resonate; this is how I "play with my toys" as a grown-up. This particular concept actually started in my head as a scene in Maccadam's, where the three Decepticon Mega-clones are at a table nursing drinks and covered with injuries from their hazardous work, glaring at Blowout who's on the edge of an Autobot group. But that feels more like a background thing, not the focus of a pic, and while I might still use it someday if I do another Maccadam's piece, I felt like it worked pretty well as its own battle scene too. And my brain really didn't want to have to wait to do something with these guys, so I went for it.

JZLobo In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-11-14 03:00:22 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, yeah, we don't want to overdo the bar scenes. I've done that myself in my fanfics.

I play with my toys by putting them into cool poses, myself. I think your way's entertaining to more people.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2011-11-15 07:31:17 +0000 UTC]

Heh, well I do that too. Maybe I should post photos of my dioramas... It's my dream to someday have a basement with a big landscape like people do with model train sets, only populate it with my TF collection in battle scenes. Jets suspended from the ceiling swooping down, missiles in flight, maybe even explosions if there's a way to do them well. Cars crashing in mid-transformation, humans running away, city-bots throwing buildings at each other...

I've never actually done anything anywhere nearly that elaborate, though. In reality, I just make little scenes on my bookshelves with the most interesting poses I can balance. But someday...
