Description
“Rewind & Hubcap: I Have This Condition”Ever since I saw this movie, I've thought about how its premise could be adapted with Transformers. They've got computer brains! What if someone's memories stopped being written to hard disk, and they only had a few minutes' worth of storage in RAM? Running with more elements of the plot, I figured Hubcap would be a perfect stand-in for the main character's questionable helper. I'd originally conceived of that main character being Nightbeat, what with the mystery-solving angle and all. But when it occurred to me that I could afflict amnesia on Rewind, of all 'bots, I couldn't resist it. (Plus he has a canonical "spouse" , so even better! My apologies, Domey fans.)

It's so good! It's by Christopher Nolan, who also did the Christian Bale Batman movies, Inception, Interstellar, and some others. It was only his second film, but honestly I think it's better than all the rest. I've only watched it once because the actual story, once I pieced it all together, felt massively bleak and hopeless. But the storytelling itself was amazing and damn near perfect. It's built around the gimmick of the narrative being told backward, with the protagonist afflicted by a form of amnesia that prevents him from forming new long-term memories. So he can remember his past up to a point, but after that, he's limited to about five minutes' worth of recent memories. So when the movie starts, we see the end of the story the same way he would, devoid of context. And as the scenes progress in reverse chronological order, the start of each one feels more or less the same as that. It takes a while for the audience to really understand more than the character does.
Oh man, it's good. Maybe I'm ready to gird my emotional loins and give it another go. Maybe.
