Description "City-bot Attendants: Down At Maccadam's"
Prints available!
This goes out to Mike "Quag Prime" Myers, a dear friend who passed away in November 2010 . He was one of the most genuinely good-natured and funny people I've ever known, and he got me started selling art at conventions by lending space on his dealer-table. He always loved my work, and I think he'd really get a kick out of this piece.

The Transformer city-bot toys came with smaller robots who generally got short shrift, fiction-wise. (After all, the big toys sell themselves; why bother advertising the little guys?) I figure this sentiment would have an echo within the world of the fiction, too: forgotten grunts literally overshadowed by their gigantic charges. Who else would understand them but each other, and where else could they commiserate but at Maccadam's Old Oil House , where allegiances are left at the door?

Around the table are Full-Tilt , Brunt , Cog , Fasttrack (you can just see his hand and the back of his head), and Scamper . In the midground is Six-Gun , with Wipe-Out braced for a party foul. And in the back the bartender looks on while Slammer chats up Nightracer (who has nothing to do with city-bots, but I wanted a female Decepticon in there, and beggars can't be choosers). In Japan, several of those toys were recolored as new characters, but the picture was crowded enough as it was, so I limited it to the American sphere.

...Wait, how are any of them drinking?

UPDATE: Holy crap Daily Deviation!

Thank you so much to JZLobo and TommyGK for making this happen! And thank you to all the Deviants who've been commenting on and favoriting my work this whole time; the feeling that I'm contributing to a community is half the reason I do the art at all.

I'm going to quote Mike's uncanny final Facebook post: "Are you really thankfull, or just glad? Thankfullness involves gratitude to a person. More often than not these days, when someone says they're thankfull they just mean 'I'm glad (or happy) that...' Think about it and choose your words carefully.Thank you!"

I thought the Autobots and Decepticons hate each other, why are they in a bar together?

That's the joy of Maccadam's Old Oil House! The one place on Cybertron - maybe in the universe - where everybody can forget the war for a bit. (It comes from the old Marvel UK comics, and it only appeared in a couple of issues, but it's a great concept that I think has a lot of life in it.)

Maccadam's also got a shout-out in the TFA episode where Ratchet and Fanzone get zapped to Cybertron. All the old-skool fanboys squealed with glee.

May your dear friend rest in piece he sounded like a kind heart person. This is a wonderful art piece of the City-bot drones. I've always wanted to see this done and you did it well. Really like the setting. The colours are always nice from you and the use of it looks like a painting. The energon drinks being blue instead of purple is a nice refreshing touch and I like the way you made them sparkle. I can see some Swoop posters on the wall which is funny. Excellent work Astro-L I'm glad some has included this memorable G1 character and toys.

He really was, and thank you. As for the drinks, I figure the energon they're drinking isn't your ordinary variety - I like the idea of there being different "brands" with various qualities. Also, the posters are a specific parody; does that come through?

Hey, either/or is great. I'm not picky!

If anything, I prefer seeing a healthy amount of feedback in multiple places, since that encourages me to put the effort into spreading my work around. If I start to think of one site as THE site, I'll neglect others and unintentionally limit my audience. Certainly I don't post to NEARLY as many TF art forums as I used do, for better or for worse.

Haha yes by the looks of it, it must have a different cause and effect. I knew there was something to the posters but I don't exactly the meaning behind them. Care to share it with me?

Genius concept! Reminds me of one episode of "Just Shoot Me" (don't know if you ever watched it) where all the rich guys' assistants hung out together at a bar to bitch about their bosses.

Also, those pitchers are awesome.

Thank you! I did watch that show, but I never saw that episode. It sounds like the same spirit, though. "You think THAT'S bad? The other day Trypticon got another jam in his waste-disposal unit - took me five megacycles to clear out! I tell him not to eat so many Aerialbots, but does he listen?"
