Description "Thunderwing: Possession"

Started out as a speedpaint, but I ended up taking it a little further than that. Still not what I would call a "finished" piece, but I like the roughness as it stands.

Anyway, it's Thunderwing , specifically his Generations toy. In the old Marvel comics, he was a rare – perhaps unique – Decepticon leader who could interface with the Matrix like many Autobot leaders could. His quest to claim the Matrix consumed him and eventually destroyed him.

Unfortunately this doesn't leave many open story options for me to imagine for his new toy... but then I thought, what if this isn't his comic self, but rather a version of him in the cartoon universe? He never showed up there, but there's no reason he couldn't exist in it. Thing is, by the end of the series, the Matrix had been "emptied" and was referred to as a "shell." But it did still have some utility: Optimus was able to use it to enter Vector Sigma , the supercomputer that gives Transformers life. And I figured that would be a perfectly fine thing for a cartoon Thunderwing to have a rare connection to and an obsession to possess.

This Decepticon is surely one of the most ruthless.

Wow~! The roughness really does work out in this piece.

Thunderwing is my favorite character in the Transformers Stormbringer comic book. X3

Love the lighting and the way you did his hands!

Thank you! I dig how the hands came out, too. Hands are among the most important elements of a portrait, to me.

Just got this guy recently. I'm so glad they made a new toy for him. I always liked him in the comics, but his original toy was lame. XD

Beautiful work as always, I always love the way you make the scene in the image very dramatic!

Thank you! I tend to find inspiration by imagining scenes and focusing on their tipping points. What's the exact moment right before or right as a thing happens? In this case, I think the little sparks are my favorite part of the picture because they're meant to indicate that he's just about to interface with Vector Sigma. That tension is everything to me.

I adore the roughness of the drawing, so shiny yet seems to be almost dark. I didn't know his story, but you made me curious for more, I might have to look him up.

Thank you! I definitely do recommend reading his story. Most of it is in the "Classic Transformers Vol. 5" collected trade. It's some of the best of the old Marvel material.

Ah, good it's in the collected editions of the old comics, cuz I've just begun to dig my way through it (even if I'm only at the first. Thanks for the tip!

Nothing obvious about it! You might consider it a travesty! But happily it seems you don't, so DISASTER AVERTED.

By the way, I love your picfics.

Any Thunderwing is good Thunderwing! (Except maybe the Mini-Con...but even he had a good entry in the Armada profile book...)

And thanks. I'm gonna begin shooting a new one quite soon...and THUNDERWING will in fact appear in it!

THUNDERWING!

I absolutely love that guy. I notice you have his guns/pontoons pointed upward for storage, like I do, but you didn't draw the missiles attached. Any particular reason why? I like to leave them in there. It helps him look bigger - and that diminutive toy needs all the help it can get.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2011-02-04 19:11:37 +0000 UTC]

In general, I think of bright, translucent missiles as being representative of "energy blasts," not actual solid objects.

JZLobo In reply to MattDrawsRobots [2011-02-04 23:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. Well, they're sculpted like missiles, and Thunderwing's turbines in the IDW comics have orange-tips to them, so I see them as definitely having physical mass. But I know where you're coming from.

Oh, and as for his size, you can always just display him with Scouts and Legends...

Ha! True, if I collected those. But for some reason hardly any of the stores in my area carry those.
