Description My buddy who sparked my interest in anime when I was kid and hooked me up with DBZ bootleged dub tapes and other anime stuff is going to the Navy, so I quickly drew this for him before he takes off for training as a thank you since he was my art rival in school also (his words not mine). Anyone who had Dragon Ball Z Movie 9 and fast forwarded through the credits know who these fools are, but it's cool if you don't cuz this anime really isn't that good in hindsight.

Back in the day anime wasn't that easy to acquire, and by back in the day I mean mid to late 90s. You had to go to the Shrine on Sunday to get your anime from a dude who had a Vegeta tattoo on his leg and then if you wanted to get your manga you had to go to Little Tokyo and then hop on Netscape and hope someone translated that stuff for you on some fan site. Now everything is on youtube and is translated, you kids have it so much easier and I'm not even that much older than you guys.

Unfortunately, all my bootlegs from the 90's were destroyed in a flood. My parents had to take me into NYC because one shop kept getting shipments. I stumbled across my first (a hilarious bootleg translation of bojack) in a flea market and was hooked. I eventually got my hands on the 'plan to eradicate the saiyans' that they remade for a game a few years ago (unfortunately also lost in the flood) Then I tried getting up early to see it before school, but 6am is hard for a young gradeschooler haha. So many memories of the early days. It certainly has gotten easier to keep up with it all these days, translations are available within hours. (though the price for legitimate copies is obscenely ridiculous). This is a nice tribute Β piece, wonder if you have any dragon ball stuff too haha. Gets me itching to draw again, its been years.

That's unfortunate that happened to your earlier bootlegs. I had to wake up at 6am every morning to get ready for school so I always caught some DBZ before leaving the house. When they stopped airing new episodes of the Namek saga, I realized it was on Telemundo and even though I couldn't stand any Spanish, I just kept watching. Luckily Toonami announced they were going to air DBZ up until the cell saga, so I stopped watching the telemuno broadcast. I have seen some Dragon Ball, but I never finished the series. My buddy just told me to watch the Piccolo vs Goku fight. You should draw, just for the fun of it.

Little Tokyo? Pffft... try finding anime and manga in the mid-late nineties in Oklahoma. Look up Webcrawler on Netscape after your dial-up connects and hope you find someone trading fansubbed vhs tapes! Ah, times have changed.

Nice pic, too. I wish I'd drawn something for my anime bud when she joined the navy.

Thanks, I forget how much easier it is to find stuff in LA compared to other cities and states. But before Toonami, you had to catch DBZ at 6am or on telemundo. Luckily times have changed for the better, it's never to late to draw her something.
