“I don’t think either side won this war, skipper.” ~original (too long) title.
The Story:
Two rival factions were so obsessed with destroying each other that their respective superweapons ended up destroying the planet on which they resided.
The Reason:
So my mates had already expressed an interest in a destroyed world, which gave me a pretty good idea. Then I saw Beyond the Frontier’s Lost Lands competition and I decided to do one to really stretch myself. So for three days I went pretty much nuts on Photoshop, bringing my A-game.
The process:
Started off looking at Voyager’s guide here [link] to get an idea as to what to do, seeing as there are no other destroyed planet tutorials. I am not a speed painter, but the idea got me going.
I also cruised some stocks to get some idea; I used these [link] §ion=&global=1&q=asteroid#/d3czr9, [link] §ion=&global=1&q=asteroid#/dpxgsz, [link] §ion=&q=dead#/d1d9fco, though there were many others that got my attention.

To be truly honest, I do not find this critique very helpful. I am in no way saying that I disapprove of negative review, I just am not quite certain what most of this critique is asserting. As far as the lighting is concerned, my original intent was to have most of the light come from the blackbody radiation of the planet’s core, itself still under heavy gravity; I did, however, do some work on the lighting as a number of other people suggested that, too. Right now, I am relying on the people who fav’d this to tell me if it is this is a good critique; personally, as I said, I have very little idea what it is saying.

CRACK!
Wow. There is so much detail and motion and BOOM in this image! It really has an overwhelming effect.
I think it's VERY important that you included those demolished human bones in the image. I see a lot of works like this, and as good as they are they never quite move me. The presence of something relatable, something that also adds perspective, really makes this piece stand out against other similar ones.

amazing! the deatil is great! the reddish molten rock stands out beautifully against the dark sky ^^ the stars in the background are great and also love the disintegrated skeleton! great touch! excellent job ^^

This is dark but we can see every details and almost feel the "death" of this planet. Really good !

Thanks so much; it was actually darker at one point, but people complained a but so I lightened it. I think I will upload the darker one now as an alternative. Thanks for the comment!

How do you make the texture like that?

This piece took 30ish hours and, I am not going to lie, almost every second was a pain in the ass. I didn't have a tablet yet, thus it all was done with a mouse.
As far as the detail is concerned, there were 100+ layers at the end of this monster and most of them had various effects on them. I am thinking of doing some tutorials later on how I do what I do; it all depends on time, I guess.
