Description
Regular readers will know that I’m presently engaged in drawing Apeman and Monkeyboy stories for inclusion as backup features in an independent comic called Bubba the Redneck Werewolf, but what you might not know is that my first ever published comicky thing was a story starring the eponymous lycanthrope. In late 2003, Mitch Hyman – the creator and writer of Bubba – invited fans to write and draw their own stories for inclusion in the sixth issue (or the Fan-Powered Issue, as it became known). The completed comic, which was printed in October 2004, contained three 10-page tales each produced by a different creative team – and the first of the three was written by ace wordsmith Larry Williams and drawn by myself. It was entitled “Close En-Cow-Ters”, it involved evil mutant alien cow people attempting to take over the Earth, and it included a sequence where Bubba and Angus (the leader of the evil mutant alien cow people) had a bit of an argument about the whole conquering-the-planet thing. Plonked above these words is an excerpt from that sequence, which should give you some idea of the level of debate.
Close En-Cow-Ters was the first project that Larry and I ever worked on together, and it was such tremendous fun that we immediately decided to do loads more collaborative stuff. We’ve got all kinds of ape-related things planned for the future, so keep watching for new developments!

A very nice four-panel fight sequence! I especially like how the impacts push out into the borders.

I was really pleased with that aspect of the page - I was trying to make the blows look as powerful as possible, and I think the spiky panel-breaks really helped with that.
As it happens, these four panels are just a fragment of the original page - there are actually nine panels in total, and I extracted these ones by way of a sample. The full page may yet appear here at some point in the future, depending on whether something I have in mind comes to fruition. Stay tuned!

They can be tricky, but they're also enormously good fun. (And quite cathartic - if you're feeling a bit irritable, drawing a couple of big monsters punching each other is a splendidly good way to unwind.)

They are indeed, but you may be pleased to know that they're still being published - Bubba's adventures are now in the hands of Scare Tactix Graphix, a new independent comicky venture, and the latest issue has just been released. See here: [link] for more info.

The original Bubba books are pretty tricky to track down, and no mistake. But there are new ones on the way - check out this place: [link] for more info...

Actually, this particular story was published a few years ago, in issue six of the original run of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf. You can still find copies on eBay though, and there may be a possibility of the story being reprinted at some point in the future. Watch this space for updates...

I love these drawings, these characters look so real and aesthetic at the same time - I have REAL trouble uniting the two with my characters. Your drawing style is great, thumbs up!

Don't tell anyone I told you, but the winner in this particular instance turned out to be Bubba. Angus put up a good fight, though - few people can claim to have nutted a werewolf in the schnozz, for example.

rofl...well, okay...I will not tell anyone you told me that XD Hurray for Bubba!
ahhh...At least Angus tried his best...and when you nutted a werewolf in the schnozz...the werewolf would nut you out cold XP

The panel-rip effects were something that just sort of happened - I wanted a little more room to draw the characters and the assorted bits of flying debris, and it seemed like a fun way of expanding the available space. I'm glad you like the look of it, and ta muchly for the kind words!
