Description
Clarence and Bobo never know when they'll be called upon to spring into action as Apeman and Monkeyboy, and this can be problematic - during the day they're on view to all the humans who visit the zoo, and in the evening, when the keepers go home and the animals have the run of the place, they could get a call from SAL the supercomputer while outside their enclosure. As such, the simian duo have installed secret tunnels all over the zoo so that, no matter where they happen to be at any given time or who happens to be in the vicinity, they've always got a quick access route nearby to take them to their hidden underground base. They've also constructed a whole load of nifty gadgets to help make their double lives easier (perhaps the most impressive of which are the SCRDs (Surprisingly Convincing Robot Doubles), which they use when they have to go on a daylight mission or remain outside the zoo for extended periods to ensure neither the humans nor the animals notice their absence), and these include several cunning devices designed to change them into their superhero costumes in a matter of seconds, one of which can be seen in action above.A running gag of the comic is that, in every story, Clarence and Bobo end up having to access their base through some differently outlandish (and hopefully amusing) method, and the manner in which their outfits are applied changes each time as well. The robotic hands appear in Stomp!, the story that featured in the Bubba Sci-Fi Special, and in their next appearance (which may be coming up sooner rather than later - stay tuned for more info) the simian duo make use of a special elevator that suits them up as they descend, although not entirely correctly. Hey, even genius gorillas get things wrong occasionally.
The linework in this image was produced by me, while the hugely snazzy digital colouring is the work of the magnificent Michael Dolce. Three cheers for Mr D, everyone!

Gadgets like this can be handy, but you have to make sure you stand in exactly the right place to prevent the thing from trying to pull a pair of spandex trunks over your head or something.

Yes indeedy. In fact, you'd have a hell of a job just to fit Clarence into a phone booth on his own, never mind the pair of them and some kind of complicated costume-applying device. They'd both end up needing a chiropractor.

Quite a good point in the process shown here. Good job as usual.
