Description
Regular readers will know that I’m presently engaged in drawing Apeman and Monkeyboy stories for inclusion as backup features in an independent comic called Bubba the Redneck Werewolf, but what you might not know is that my first ever published comicky thing was a story starring the eponymous lycanthrope. In late 2003, Mitch Hyman – the creator and writer of Bubba – invited fans to write and draw their own stories for inclusion in the sixth issue (or the Fan-Powered Issue, as it became known). The completed comic, which was printed in October 2004, contained three 10-page tales each produced by a different creative team – and the first of the three was written by ace wordsmith Larry Williams and drawn by myself. It was entitled “Close En-Cow-Ters”, it involved evil mutant alien cow people attempting to take over the Earth, and it included a sequence where Bubba and Angus (the leader of the evil mutant alien cow people) had a bit of an argument about the whole conquering-the-planet thing. Plonked above these words is an excerpt from that sequence, which should give you some idea of the level of debate.
Close En-Cow-Ters was the first project that Larry and I ever worked on together, and it was such tremendous fun that we immediately decided to do loads more collaborative stuff. We’ve got all kinds of ape-related things planned for the future, so keep watching for new developments!

Ah, well spotted! Although it was never mentioned in the actual story, Larry and I had an explanation for this. The thing is, y'see, Angus is a warlord and not a very nice bovine. He comes from a society where arguments are generally settled by battles to the death, and he's turned any number of rivals into fillet steak - and his clothes are made from the hide of the last guy who made the mistake of annoying him.
"Creepy" sums it up pretty well, in fact.

Many thanks! The lettering always takes ages to do (I don't have the means to do snazzy words on my Mac, so I draw them by hand), so it's groovy to know that people like the look of it.

If you've not seen the actual comic (which is, let's face it, extremely likely) you'll be pleased to know that Bubba does indeed emerge victorious from this particular punch-up. But don't tell anyone I told you.

Thanks! The comic has been delayed a bit because of stuff happening behind the scenes (head honcho Mitch is still beavering away getting movie-related things sorted out), but there should be another issue out later this year. I shall post any news on the front of my gallery here.

Actually, given that the fight took place at night in a field, he was probably at least moderately chilly at this point in the narrative. Still, I'm glad you like him!

Blast, it cut me off again! Take 2.
The fight between Angus and Bubba is probably the most intense thing I've drawn - I was aiming to make it punishing without going overboard on the bloodiness, and it's gratifying to know that it comes across as suitably ferocious. Cheers!
