Description
Examining my files, I see that it's almost exactly a decade since I drew this. Blimey, that makes me feel old.Like this piccy , the above cartoon was drawn for the student newspaper at Bournemouth University. In this instance, I was asked to illustrate a story about a new nightclub in the town that was keeping students awake – not, surprisingly, because they were inside the place leaping up and down to horrible dance music being played at ear-splitting volume until 3am, but because they lived quite near the place and couldn't get to sleep on account of horrible dance music being played at ear-splitting volume until 3am. Zounds, the irony.
(As a not-particularly-brief aside, it may disinterest you to learn that during my 30-something years on this planet, I have set foot inside a nightclub precisely once – and this, as it happens, was during my time as a Bournemouth University student. I was persuaded to attend a venue named The Old Fire Station because there was live comedy in the basement one evening; among the acts was Junior Simpson, who was excellent, and a man who hammered nails through parts of his anatomy, who emphatically wasn't. The rest of the club beyond the basement was exactly as I'd expected, which is to say revoltingly hot, appallingly overcrowded and pounding with relentless, tuneless, brain-shattering noise, so that you could only communicate with other people by standing right next to them and screaming directly into their faces. I yelled my excuses and left, and I've not "clubbed" since. ANECDOTE ENDS.)
I'm really fond of this one – I had longer than usual to work on it, so I was able to spend more time on the inking and lettering and come up with a proper background and everything, and I even managed to work in a Monty Python reference just because I could. I apologise for nothing.
Also, it was gratifying to be paid money for having a go at nightclubs in a student newspaper. Remember, kids – pay no attention to what rappers tell you. Nightclubs are rubbish.

I never liked the old fire station, it was fine in freshers week but it quickly turned boring.

Funnily enough, it was during Freshers Week that I made my one and only trip inside the place. That was, as you'll have gathered, quite sufficient experience of "clubbing" for me. The fact is, I had plenty of grandly more fun stuff to occupy my free time at Bournemouth; booking out the lecture theatres under the auspices of the Sci-Fi Society and linking PCs to the screens to play cinema-sized multiplayer Diablo, for example. Chuckle.

I must confess, I've not encountered a church like that. It must be difficult to dance convincingly to All Things Bright and Beautiful.

I thought you might. I believe The Old Fire Station is still up and running; perhaps one day we'll have to venture back to Bournemouth and then not go anywhere near the ruddy place, for old time's sake.

I share the sentiment. There used to be this annoying lounge that was just down the street (I can see it right out my window). Their music was not only god awful but they annoyed so many people that we petitioned the city to vacate. Now it's an abandoned dump no one uses.
Anyway nice job on the pic, it definitely captures the annoyance factor of shitty nightclubs.

Cheers! And it's true, nightclubs can offer all manner of irritations beyond the ghastly music, many of which are directly connected with the people who come staggering outside at 2am after several dozen alcoholic beverages too many, and decide that what the world really needs is to hear them bellowing their favourite Bryan Adams song. Tunelessly. At length. Gngh.

More than a decade has passed since my one and only nightclub-based escapade, and I certainly don't feel like I've missed out on anything. I much prefer meals out with chums at a nice pub or restaurant, not least because you can hold conversations without the aid of a megaphone.
