Description This chap, you’ll be thoroughly unshocked to learn, is another member of the Apeman and Monkeyboy cast. He’s one of the various other gorillas who inhabit the same enclosure as Clarence at San Diablo Zoo, and he’s generally a bright and cheerful sort of fellow, although he’s occasionally prone to bemusement and/or exasperation at Bobo’s antics, hence the above expression. (I drew him that way purely because it amused me.)

Rufus, like all the gorillas (and indeed most of the other animals in the zoo), gets on well with Clarence. But due to the expectations of the zookeepers and the visiting public he’s been compelled to play the role of a young upstart ape who continually challenges Clarence’s authority as the leader of the group, so whenever humans are around the two of them spend a lot of time roaring at each other and fighting. Of course, as with every aspect of what humans believe to be “normal” animal behaviour, it’s all an act - their conflicts are scripted and meticulously rehearsed in advance, and their “fights” usually take place behind conveniently-placed boulders where they use slapsticks, dustbin lids and other theatrical props to create the sounds of battle.

This sort of thing goes on all the time. You know those nature documentaries where you see lions pouncing on gazelles? It’s all painstakingly choreographed for the benefit of the cameras, so the human population never cotton on to just how sophisticated the animals of the world really are. Once David Attenborough goes home they wipe off the fake blood, put the “gazelle corpse” dummies back in storage and go and share a bottle of pampas grass wine down at the local watering hole. To us, it’s natural history. To them, it’s showbusiness.

Rufus would be a perfect model for a giant gorilla, check the thickness of the fingers of the gorilla? It looks great, and muscular, knows how to make a cartoon about giant gorillas? I would find it amazing, a giant gorilla, saving the city as well as KingDead!

He is indeed, but he's a very modest ape, and quite a gentle fellow really. But he can certainly *act* like a swaggering, muscle-flexing bully boy when the situation requires it. Like all good thespians, he's tremendously versatile.

Welcome back there sir Matthew. Nice ape you got there. Looking good. Who is he in the Apeman and monkey boy story? I am now curious XD

I second Mr. Phobo-romulus' comment. How DO you get such clean lines ^^

MatthewSmith In reply to NWolf15 [2008-12-04 19:38:17 +0000 UTC]

Regarding the lines thing, you'll see my guessy explanation if you swivel your peepers in an upwards motion. As for Rufus' place in the story, he's one of several gorillas who live in the same enclosure as Clarence and Bobo at San Diablo Zoo. They're quite a fun bunch - I shall have to post drawings of the rest of them at some point.

NWolf15 In reply to MatthewSmith [2008-12-04 21:46:04 +0000 UTC]

Lolz...yep, I swiveled my peepers in an upward motion. You meant to say that you just resize the whole thing to make it smooth? I do the pencil-techpen style too but the image just isn't fair from the paper to the computer...it would appear nice on paper but in the computer, it looks like there were missing chunks of ink on the lines. (Barbed wire - as you put it).

Ahh...that clears up things. So the whole thing is a play to ruse people into thinking not to mess with animals instincts...making it look like they were less sophisticated. Brilliant! hehe Thought he'd be an addition to Apeman's aid like a mechanic or something XD

MatthewSmith In reply to Central01Order [2008-12-04 19:33:25 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. Next time you're at the zoo, see if you can sneak up on one of the cute mammal enclosures when nobody else is around - you might just catch the meerkats going over their lines.

"Right, so I sit up on the big rock and chitter at the birds as they fly overhead, yeah?"

"Yes, I've arranged for them to go past after I go running along that branch there."

"Okay. Then I pretend to think one of the crows is an eagle and start squeaking a lot..."

"...And we all dive down the burrows and don't come out again until all the humans have got bored and wandered off."

"Perfect. Tea, anyone?"

Don't let them know you've seen them, though. They may have to silence you.

Also, thanks for the kind words!

Phobos-Romulus [2008-11-30 20:00:59 +0000 UTC]

How do you get such clean lines?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatthewSmith In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2008-12-04 19:22:16 +0000 UTC]

I tend to pencil things quite precisely (including varying the line thickness at appropriate points), and then I just ink directly over the top. That's probably the key - by spending more time on the pencils I can catch mistakes and smooth things out (Hurrah for erasers!) before the pen makes things permanent.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Phobos-Romulus In reply to MatthewSmith [2008-12-04 19:36:27 +0000 UTC]

Sure, but o you use any digital techniques t make it super clean? Like any special scanning options?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatthewSmith In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2008-12-04 20:03:01 +0000 UTC]

For inky drawings, I always use the "Black and White Document" setting on the scanner, and I scan them at 720dpi, so that every last little detail is captured. I save them as TIFF files, then check to make sure there are no major errors on the image (stray spots of grit or dust, etc) and literally white-out any significant blemishes in Photoshop. (I never redraw any of the linework, though – at 720dpi even the smoothest line looks like it was drawn with a piece of barbed wire dipped in coal dust, so it pays not to start fiddling with the picture as otherwise you'll be there all week.) Finally I shrink the pic using the Image Size options (I change them into 72dpi, but unconstrained, so I can alter the dimensions to whatever size I want), and Save For Web as a JPEG. Hope this proves useful!

MatthewSmith In reply to FrostyPuppy [2008-12-04 19:17:39 +0000 UTC]

Cheers for the kindly comment! And yes, he hardly seems like the sort of character you'd see in a comic whose central characters are a gorilla and a chimp, does he? Just as well I cleared that up at the start, really.

Rufus's face and expression is pure fantastic! I feel sorry for him from the infernal Monkeyboy.

MatthewSmith In reply to HoundGrey [2008-12-04 19:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Bobo's heart is in the right place, but he occasionally seems to lose his brain down the back of the sofa, which can lead to severe bewilderment for those in his vicinity. He's the sort of housemate who wakes you up to tell you sheepishly that he's broken the television, and then brightens enthusiastically as he explains that it's okay, because he's sure he can fix it with this sledgehammer he's found.

Regarding the behaviour of animals in the world of Apeman and Monkeyboy, it's more like they're one big global theatrical company - they're taught from the earliest of ages how to act (literally) when humans can see them, and animals that spend a lot of time under human observation (the ones in zoos and on farms, the ones kept as pets, etc) actually script and rehearse things in advance to make sure everyone's on the same page, so to speak. It's a complicated life, but not as complicated as things would be if humanity learned the truth. It's safer just to let us keep bumbling around thinking that we're in charge of everything.
