A very good picture. Lots of controversial images. It's definitely got people talking about it. Not a complaint, merely confusion here as to why the artist didn't give an explanation of the the image. We look at this and almost everyone is going to come up with a different viewpoint. It would be very interesting to hear from the artist just what it was that inspired him to produce this really great picture.

Art like this is made to make people think and interpret the pieces for themselves.

It has definitely done the job of making people think. It's got a lot of people talking about it. I know I like it. I'm more of a traditionalist kind of art lover. Stuff like Rembrandt, Cote, Caravaggio, etc etc. I spent some cash buying Corel and a program on how to do the anime drawing stuff. But it's going to be a while before I put any of that online. I'll keep taking pics for now.

The art is open to interpretation, you draw your own conclusion. Salvador Dali is a fine example of interpretation art.

By the way, great piece Mat

Alas, is this what our future will become? Religion leaves us, our own country leaves us and U.S. is no longer the country we were brought up believing in...or am I misinterpreting the meaning?

Scary thought, but a good painting.

whole europe used same letters, the only arrived different times to different areas.
it started from rome are in iron age.
but only in North they used 16 marks (Norway and Sweden) Finnish were never written with runes, our oral folklore is stronger than letters, as Kalevala proves.

What a fucking surprise.

manic-goose In reply to Ailiuridae [2012-10-01 16:12:24 +0000 UTC]

This is in no way misandry. If anything it is the opposite. The story of Prometheus is that he brought fire to humanity, knowing the risk, and he was punished for it in this fashion... in other words, this 'man' (Titan) was willing to sacrifice himself for the betterment of others. Misandry is about man hating, and here he is the victim, not the villain. As for the intended meaning of the image... I can only speculate. America is clearly the child of tomorrow in this image (and compared with Greeks and Romans, I guess that can make sense. It looks like America is still weeping for the suffering of the one who brought us fire... fire symbolizes many things... but in this case, perhaps it means divine energy, purification, revelation or something else positive... which we need, and perhaps need more of... alternatively, America is weeping because Prometheus brought fire to Earth... in which case, perhaps it represents something darker like its destructive power... for example, the atom bomb. Honestly, I don't know the artist's intent, but I feel this image is meant to be interpreted differently by each person, to see what they will in it. In that case, it is a bit concerning that you saw misandry of all things... because I feel that is way off the path that was intended, even if the exact interpretation is open for debate.

Flaivdar In reply to manic-goose [2012-10-01 19:05:01 +0000 UTC]

:devailiuradae: may have thought 'Misandry' because of the country's national animal symbol, the Eagle, feeding from Prometheus as 'Man-hating'.

Although reading ~oasiaris 's response "So the child could be crying because people are often punished for good deeds.", makes a lot of sense after comparing Jesus represented by the Crown of Thorns and Prometheus who both did good things. And the U.S. flag makes me think it's the U.S. that's the victim here but Idk...the message comes off as a bit jumbled. Or wait, maybe it's the Religion and Politics of the U.S. vs. the American Tax Payers? Hmmmm, so many guesses but no direct answers.

It is interesting to read through some of the responses to see other interpretations that may give the viewer a better understanding behind the piece.

I wish the artist would be direct about the piece's message.

manic-goose In reply to Flaivdar [2012-10-01 20:03:04 +0000 UTC]

like I said, i think it was meant to be interpreted in different ways by different people. That is probably why it got the DD. The ambiguity of it gives ti weight.

Just explaining as to why he/she may have thought that is all. Very true. Possibly, Idk. That it does.

manic-goose In reply to Flaivdar [2012-10-01 21:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I think he saw misandry because that is what he was looking for. It is human nature to find what you expect... even when it isn't there. That's how witch trials happen and the rounding up of suspected communist traitors during the cold war. If you look for evidence of something bad, you will see it in everything. That's my take on the comment. As for the picture, I think the artist would be pleased by the debates and comments that are flying everywhere because of his work. I know I would be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Flaivdar In reply to manic-goose [2012-10-01 21:45:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, if this is open to interpretation then Misandry is what he saw. Because if it's open to interpretation and the artist doesn't speak for the piece itself there's no right or wrong. I don't have to look to find anything wrong or bad because it's actually there. Oh yes, I'm sure the artist is very pleased on the commentators.

oasiaris In reply to manic-goose [2012-10-01 18:32:13 +0000 UTC]

Also look at the crown of thorns. That could symbolize christianity, Jesus or faith. If you link that to Prometheus you could interpret it as a comparison between Jesus, who was hanged on the cross for doing something he believed was right, and prometheus, who essentially did the same thing. So the child could be crying because people are often punished for good deeds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

manic-goose In reply to oasiaris [2012-10-01 20:04:11 +0000 UTC]

It did cross my mind, and to me the crown of thorns is another symbol of suffering on the behalf of others. That is clearly a theme. Maybe that is why the child of tomorrow is crying.

It is not the story behind the image, but the story of daily deviations.
What visually 'fits' their bias.
