I think there are so many ways to interpret this, that even if we learned the artist's original viewpoint, we'd still see more.

That said, I love the amount of symbolism here, regardless of what the first glance might say. There is a lot going on here and I wish it would keep going as I deeply love stories within stories.

Okay correct me if i'm wrong, but I see this as a potrayal of inspiration being set to torture becuase of ideas already put forward. When you made this piece what were you invisioning?

No...this is more like the Mass Effect 3 ending. The game creators had this awesome artistic vision in their brain, but failed to communicate those ideas through the chosen medium, in this case a video game. This piece of art sits squarely in the same box.

I don't know why people are so mystified, it's all in the title. My interpretation - Prometheus sacrificed himself for mankind, so civilization could develop and grow. Now he looks in horror at the child of tomorrow, because his sacrificed was in vain. Too many children are hungry, without shelter, suffering, even in a land of plenty. Even some people who claim to follow another who also sacrificed himself, turn their backs to those who have fallen on hard times.

Your interpretation is making much more sense than mine, so I thank you for sharing. I was thinking something many would consider 'political'.

I thoroughly agree with the idea of this interpretation, in knowing mankind cannot be helped by such simple means nor ends.

This is one awesome artwork. I guess there's no need to comment on the mastery it's been painted with (I especially like how the sky almost seems to be reflecting on the body). I, however, don't get how so many people can be complaining about the symbology which is, according to me, clear... I'm pretty sure everyone will interpret it with slight differences - as it is always with art, but the message is so cool and provocative that the artist just SHOULD leave it up to us to get it our way!

The symbolism in this is impressive. I can't help but find myself mildly disturbed by this though, and I'm not even much of a patriotic United States citizen.

As an art piece and a conceptual one at that, the meaning is derived from the viewer. I have some difficulty cyphering my own, but I can't help but to interpret the pieces of the puzzle. It should be worth noting that Prometheus was at some point considered a symbol of socialism/communism by Karl Marx (giving fire to man). The bald eagle of course has always been a stand-in for liberty. The thorn-ed crown speaks for itself, but may be figurative for mock-piety (possibly representing a hollow sense of grandeur). With that everything doesn't gel particularly well, but that's my view.

bolsterstone In reply to Amaroo87 [2012-10-02 03:13:36 +0000 UTC]

I am still puzzled why the man is looking in terror at the young child / flag, and not at the eagle? (Flip the picture upside-down to see what I mean -- check the direction of his gaze.)

rainbowingz [2012-10-02 02:53:38 +0000 UTC]

Prometheus, was tied to the rock and condemned for his thieving ways, in a sense made a lowlife or lower class, the eagle represented Zeus in the story of Prometheus here I believe it represents a higher power. The child is wearing a light purple and gold gown symbolizing wealth, nobility (higher class) and a crown of thorns (also associated with, the cross, as a symbol of self sacrifice and/or humility) with the American flag beneath it. She's standing over Prometheus and looking towards the sky while crying. They also appear to be in a very desolate place which could indicate drought/ hard times.
I believe it is symbolic of the upper class self-sacrificing themselves for the lower classes (Even those who don't deserve it) for the sake of the whole of America.
Just speculation, no offenses intended. The great thing about an artwork like this is that it leaves interpretation wide open. Maybe not knowing what the artist intended is a blessing.

Really? I look at it and see a guy who is being munched on by an eagle and a crying child of undetermined sex holding the Star Spangled Banner. I don't know where you got the self-sacrifice or upper/lower class from. In fact, I can't see the connection between Prometheus or the U.S. here really -- other than the fact that they are in the same picture. Maybe you have to be a U.S. citizen to make sense of it?

rainbowingz In reply to bolsterstone [2012-10-02 03:36:20 +0000 UTC]

I read a little deep into the symbolism perhaps. I determined the child's gender by her attire. where she wears what is more like a dress, a young boy would be wearing a single sheet toga that would be much simpler and much less elegant, the thin gold strap on her shoulder would not be worn by a Greek boy and if it were a boy part of his torso would likely be exposed. Also, ancient Greek mythology has been used as symbolism in political paintings in countries all over the world for hundreds of years, even before America.
What country are you from? I don't know if it's made world news or not, but America has worked itself into an economic crisis bordering on a depression a year or two back. Instead of doing their part, the rich are slowly but surely evacuating the country.

With the way the our country is going, that's kind of what I imagined with the child too.

While technically well done, the imagery gets a bit muddled with all the of the symbolism behind each part of the image.

Just my two cents though.
