Description
the "Finish Avatar" project week three.....
Uggggghhhh.... my scanner went from scanning images in 400dpi in the matter of minutes to 300dpi in just under an hour. I have no idea what's going on... but It's really annoying.
I used to scan an image twice. Once for the bare pencils (which I would change color and print out for easy inking), and again for the inks (it makes it easier to separate the pencils from the line-art). If I tried that now... I would waste 2 hours JUST scanning it... and I don't have the time to do that.
On the upside... It's forcing me to learn how to ink digitally and I'm making strives in that aspect (judging by how unrecognizable past attempts have been). I've also tried cell shading again, tell me what you think.
So... I'll probably follow this new format with future pics until I get my scanner figured out.
I'm a bit annoyed.

Best. Crack. Ship. Ever.
That whole part was just a fangirl's dream come true.
Nicely re-done. I highly approve.

I have to agree with you there
But it is definitely a crack ship... their personalities are such polar opposites that they'd kill each other before they had the time to actually interact. I guess that's part of the allure...
Thanks

Well opposites attract, don't they? In my little world, they got together.

Opposites attract violently, because both hate and lust are passionate emotions it's an easy switch. It's like two magnets. If you have both north or south ends of the magnets together, they will repulse each other... but if you have two opposite ends they will crash together harshly, possibly damaging the surfaces of the magnets. Whatever they do together they do forcibly.
To me, love is not like two magnets. Instead, it's more like two blocks that grow closer together and, with time, form a bond as strong (or stronger) than the two magnets. In real life, most love forms when similarities attract.
It's true that love can form from the former bond, but it's in finding common ground between each other. My problem with Sokkla fan-fic's is that they try to make this one event... One moment of heated bliss and now they're all okay... while the truth is it's a longer process. Even if they caved to the fact that the other is not all that bad looking... there still heaps and heaps of hatred and discord between them, and that's tougher than it seems to overlook. At the very least there has to be forgiveness and amends from both sides over a large amount of time before even the thought of a real relationship can cross their minds...which means Azula would have to change drastically too.
Just as I'm not opposed to Zutarain thinking, I think Sokkla has some merit. I'd like to see a real story where two characters of their type fall in love, because it'd be such a roller coaster of emotion... and I absolutely love when literature gets that deep and complex.
Have you ever read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen? It's a couple hundred years old... so the language is a bit odd getting used to, but it's one of my favorite books. Beyond that, it's a kind of Sokkla story (although much more muted and with much less action). So this complexity isn't new, and it has been successful before. And, as long as it is... it's kinda what I'd expect from a realistic Sokkla story.
My definition of a crack ship is "anything that would require novel long literature and deep changes in one or both characters to accomplish a realistic relationship between the two." That's why I label it as such... not because it's not possible (because it is).

I'm going to be reading the good ol Pride and Prejudice for the first time for an English class this semester. So I shall see. (I know, shocking that I've never read it before.)
And I agree with your definition of a crack ship. For me I usually don't go crack ship crazy in books or shows or anything really. If two people genuinely look like they want to be together, then gosh darnit they should. Otherwise, if they have a strange moment of attraction or could be taken as such and I like BOTH characters, then yes, crack ship ahoy.
I just don't like how tense shipping has become for things like A:tLA. That's not what it's all about. Who cares who Aang gets with? The point of the show is that Aang must learn the elements and save the world. The end. I mean, I'm a Kataanger, purely because it's obvious there's attraction there and therefore I can't picture Katara running off with anyone else or vice versa.
I try to enjoy shows, not club them to death with potential romances.
And jeeze you're so much more eloquent in your speech than I was.

Remember, Pride and Prejudice is not an action packed adventure book... it's a love story where all of the conflict and tension is "everyday life" sort of stuff, and sometimes it can be boring to get through... but I think the pay off at the end is worth it. If you go into it expecting a romance and a calm inspection of life in the early 1800's, then there is a lot to be enjoyed. And don't look into the storyline before hand, or watch a movie adaptation... the less you know about it the more exciting it is (and thereby, easy to read).
Second paragraph (I feel like I need to label which part I'm discussing with these long comments ... it's my fault for rambling
). Exactly! I almost always ship canon because it makes sense to the story, but I keep myself open to different interpretations. Although Sokkla probably will never happen in that universe... the idea of it is enough to turn the cogs in my brain, and imagine the long, twisted, broken road that a relationship like that would have to go down before it could blossom (Did I mention I love this sort of stuff?
) but I'm not going to fight to say it HAS to happen.
Which leads me to the third paragraph. I hate how shipping wars have grown out of this show... even after the final episode has aired and the new show (wherein it's been announced that Tenzin is Aang and Katara's son) is set to air. Personally, I think the reason is selfish. They don't care about the character's desires and wishes... they just want to force them into a mold and objectify them until the story they want is told. A true fanfiction follows the characters' personality, the author needs to ask questions like "what would this character do in a situation like this?" "how would this action interact with this certain character's moral code?" "What would it take for this character to break their own moral code, or would they ever do such a thing?" and "What are this character's feelings towards another character, and what would it take to change it?" This is so vastly important to a well written story, whether the characters are yours or not, that it cannot be dismissed... and yet it is. What you said at the end of this paragraph describes this notion perfectly: "I mean, I'm a Kataanger, purely because it's obvious there's attraction there and therefore I can't picture Katara running off with anyone else or vice versa" (I've bold-ed the part's I'm talking about). Seriously, I could hug you right now . People need to take these sorts of things into account.
I think shipping can be very healthy to a fan-base and the universe in general. It brings people together, and keeps them talking about things long after the show is finished (look at us right now). But it needs to be done right. If it isn't, people will just end up fighting over meaningless stuff even though they are both avid fans, and they both care so much about the show and the characters. To us, these characters can become real people. We can imagine their pain, we can feel their joy. We laugh with their jokes, we celebrate with their triumphs, we cry with their loss... when did we forget all this and start arguing?
I'm glad DA doesn't enforce a character-count-limit. I'd be sooooo screwed.

I know practically nothing about Pride and Prejudice, with the exception of Mister Darcy. And even then, I only know his name. And maybe something about how he’s a dick…I don’t know. Now that I am actually going to read it I’m going to shield myself from knowing anything until I finish. I hate having books I care about spoiled for me. And I’ve been meaning to read it for a long time…so therefore I care.
And AMEN to shipping cannon. It just over complicates things sometime when you start putting all these people together that never get together. It just ends up disappointing you in the end and it really confuses you more than anything. And then the cannon that may actually be quite awesome…well it loses that awesomeness in your eyes because you’ve set yourself up with those people being with others. And dude, in response to Sokka and Azula that sex has to be HOT. But I’m not about to go around waving my flag in people’s faces screaming about it. Do you read WoT by any chance? The only other good example I have of a crack ship that I totally support is from those books. (and if you did, dude, we need to like have these long conversations more often, haha)
It just makes me so sad when I see people putting all their romance eggs in a basket that they know will never happen and not even open their eyes to the possibility of having those people be with others in actuality. And OMG, finally someone who sees the Kataang/Zutara thing the same way that I do. Who FUCKING CARES if Tenzin is Aang and Katara’s son? I mean, I think there may even be some diehard Zutarians that may not even WATCH the new snow because of that piece of information. And dude, yes I could totally hug you right now too. “Personally, I think the reason is selfish. They don't care about the character's desires and wishes... they just want to force them into a mold and objectify them until the story they want is told.” A-FUCKING-MEN, DUDE. AMEN. I mean, Bryke even admitted that they never saw Zutara until the rabid fans, and they even entertained the idea of it working that way. But in reality, Zuko/Katara is much in the same mold of Sokka/Azula, they’re just too different to make things work. And besides, it’s a Nickelodeon kid’s show…c’mon.
And I totally think that people need to have something to talk about after the show is done. But I feel like it needs to be done in a healthier way sometimes. Like, chewing people’s heads off and getting into huge cyber-fights is not the way to get it done. Like this, this conversation right here. Perfectly good example of HEALTHY post-show discussions.
And omg yes, so screwed if they had a limit. Bahaha, I typed this in Word and I have like 500 words to my rant…

lol!
Yes, Mister Fitzwilliam Darcy
I'm so glad you brought up the relation to Zutara. Because it is very similar... Actually, I'd go as far as to say that Sokkla takes everything that Zutarians stand for to the absolute extreme. While I said that Pride and Prejudice is "kinda of" the way Sokkla should be written (I meant that very vaguely, it would be "similar")... it's an even more perfect description of how Zutara should be written (all the way down to the genders of the characters), because Zuko (while misguided) is a sensible bloke who has the capacity to change... Azula is just nuts, and her love story would be just as crazy no matter who it's with. Let's just say the title Pride and Prejudice isn't just a pretty name for a good book... it's probably the most perfect title applied to any book (that I've seen) as it gets to the core of what the story is about (Jane was good at doing that), I hope I'm not revealing too much by saying it...
The thing about Zutara... is I can almost see it working, if not for a few vital occurrences in the overall story (I actually talked about this in the "artist's comments" here: [link] ), and I do mean vital.
I fear that I might have to disappoint you when it comes to whether or not I've read WoT... I don't think I've even heard of it . What's it about... and what's the full name for it?
I just saw your note, so I'll stop here and reply there.

I only noticed it after, remember, I typed it in word. I lol'ed.
And it's The Wheel of Time. Epic fantasy series by Robert Jordan, finished by Brandon Sanderson.
And yes, Azula is batshit insane. Only further confirmed by the end of the season. So yes, I could see more of the validity of Zutara simply because Zuko did seem to become more of a "nice guy" at the end. Katara on the other hand...well...she became a stronger bender? I don't think she changed too much throughout the entire show.
And I am so ready for some P&P!

I HAVE heard of the "Wheel of Time" series, I just wasn't familiar with the abbreviation. In fact... one second... I'm holding Book 10 in my hand right now as I type this. We have most of the series at my house. My mom used to read them, but stopped around the 5th or 6th for a few reasons (one being each installment is novel length and the series showed no sign of stopping soon). I think she always planned to go back to it... she just never got around to it.
Myself, I've never read it. It seems like such a time investment, and it's not even finished yet. I've heard a lot of praise from a lot of people about the series... but, I think I'm going to wait until the books are finished and the final critics and fans say "it ended perfectly" before I actually pick it up.
I mean... looking at book 10, with it's fancy title "Crossroads of Twilight" and it's highly detailed map in the front and back cover (we have the hardback) that reminds me of "Lord of the Rings" in so many ways... this is a heavy book, with a lot of pages (and a glossary? holy crow!) and it's book number 10? There's nine more books I have to read just to get to this one... and it's still not the end? I don't know.... It seems like something I would like to read, and I enjoy complication and back story (I'm a "Doctor Who" fan so it's a given) and I enjoy a plot that feels like it's getting somewhere, leading to something... and I'm told this series is exactly that. But is it that good that it's worth that sort of dedication? I'm sure it must be, a lot of people who I respect read it... it's just hard jumping in to something that large.
What is it about? I guess I need this basic information before I decide either way, instead of playing the numbers game. In the end there's a lot of time in the world, therefore quality shouldn't be judged by how long it takes to enjoy something.
