Description A replica of the mighty flail of the Witch-King of Angmar (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King). I used the same process as the helmet, but sculpted it from the lighter white styrofoam and the handle from wood and plastic pieces. I coated both parts with urathane and attached the two together with a plastic chain (I may replace this with a metal one). I painted the whole thing an antique silver and wrapped the handle with leather and studs. The flail head itself stands about two feet tall and is covered with enough urathane to make it heavy and possibly dangerous. The chain is about two feet long as well, making it difficult to wield for a shorter person. Luckily I am six feet tall, so it worked out well.

How durable is the Urathane on this? Is it brittle?

That's awesome!! I'm also into making props/replicas and have been looking for urethane everywhere but I can't ever find it, could you give me some advice as to where I can find it? Thanks !!!

mattleese87 In reply to Archer-AMS [2011-10-22 21:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... about that lol. I made this in an art studio where they had like a giant urethane-spraying machine and I know it's expensive. Not sure if there are other methods, but I did think the urethane gun was pretty neat (although dangerous... if you breathe in the vapors it can crystallize inside your lungs and kill you). So as far as I know, that method is the more industrial way of doing it but for at-home projects, I really couldn't tell ya. Sorry.

Are you able to swing it one-handed?

mattleese87 In reply to RobHazelnut [2011-10-22 21:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, if you got a tad bit of muscle it's not too hard to swing. It's mostly just clumsy lol.

you know I fear anyone who swings this kind of weapon. Knight pawns samurai end of story if he's swinging this around.

To much for a mortal to wield, that's for sure.

The urathane is strong enough to protect it from damage? I just made a foam item with poly acrylic on the surface and I'm worried than any little bump will crack it. This is totally bad ass, really a work of sculpture if you ask me
