Edit: One thing I forgot to do and mention is remember to have the pointy part of the speech bubble pointing at the mouth. You can paste a speach bubble into a seprate GIMP layer to flip it.

Also, etnire Adobe's creative suite 2(CS2) is free so I reccomend getting photoshop which you can use in place of GIMP here, and it has a speech bubble shape but no outlines, so it's easier to use paint for them. You should also try embossing the text instead of speech bubbles whenever it doesn't blend too much. If it blends too much, use a speech bubble.

This is mostly stuff I figured out on my own, though at least one thing was from someone else’s advice, the centering of text.

All but the last panel are done entirely in paint, the text in the last panel is done in GIMP. Likewise, I was using Arial and Comic Book for most of the text and Anime Ace 2.0 BB in the last panel. One major caveat of these fonts is that they are stuck in capslock. Use italic and bold for emphasis and shouting respectively instead. You can also use bold or both for emphasis, it stands out more though you should scale the emphasis and use them accordingly.

A couple of other things I forgot about:

1. Ideally you want the pointy part of the speech bubble to look like it’s coming out of a character’s mouth, something I constantly forget myself.

2. If you have windows 7, paint comes with a speech bubble shape. Try to avoid using the more square one unless you specifically need to use it for something.

3. Regardless if you have windows 7 or not, if you have mspaint, you can use the circle and polygon shapes to make a speech bubble, just remember to erase the extra line when using the polygon.

4. Use google to correct your spelling. The first few results will include dictionary websites, use them to confirm the right spelling if you are not sure. At least one will give you homophones to help you with this. There is literally no excuse to not do this.

5. (Not for tumblr use) Using paint, take the first panel, cut it, and resize the image vertically. Uncheck “maintain aspect ratio” as that’s not important for a blank canvas. Then paste the first panel back in, and proceed to paste the rest.
