After taking the advise from [link] - thefouro - (thanx fouro for all the pointers !!!)My attempts are thinking about whats in the background and reducing the DoF to black it out.

Wow - thanx !! I like the idea of being known for vivid colour !
This one was more planned...was trying to practice a theory I'd been taught...I was surprised how dark the background faded....
Im glad I did it...it shows you can do those 'black background' flower shots without manip - one up for the camera effects team !

Well...this is how I did it.
Flower was fairly close to a teracotta pot so it had a darkish background. The sun was in my face so the light was not hitting the pot at all but was the flower. Then I just dipped the Fstop a lowish setting so it couldnt focus on the background too much and move camera about a bit to get anything else out of shot. Phew...long description! Hope that helps...I think I may struggle to recreate it !
Thanx again for your kind and complimentary words!

That's nice shot. Depth of field seems to be quite nice. But I really would recommend the tripod if possible, it usually helps with image quality.

I like it very much
PS: with good light and indoor shoting it's possible to have black bg. while shoting, without touchup

really - how so ?? I took this at lower DoF and at high speed outside - no photoshop. I was trying to put into practise what I had learnt.

No worries......I always like to try to get an effect without using a manipulation tool....more fun that way
