The Reliants are tough old girls (hard to call them "old" when they were brand spanking new at the beginning of the series, but that was 20 years ago and they've been dramatically superseded by the Multi-Drive Missile revolution.

They're still useful though, even if they can't handle MDMs. They'd be good for anti-piracy patrol and merchant convoy escort in Silesia, for instance.

This is quite true - I've looked at all those big, muscular MDM ships and wondered how they're going to fare in the post-Mesan-Alignment-War world when there are no significant, specific threats requiring Manticore Missile Massacre.

If the RMN is smart, they will keep a decent mix of MDM and non-MDM ships available at all times. Even after the MA and Sollies are dealt with, there will be other star nations wanting their own MDMs, and I suspect that there will still be a need for the RMN to continue innovating and building new ships. MDMs are just like nukes in the real world - everybody wants some (not an intentional quote of Billy Squier). I also figure there will be a period of stagnation, as there was at the beginning of the series where battles were pretty much formalized, and everybody major was more or less equal in capabilities.

A technical question here - does the Mk. 36 Lightweight Extended-Range Missile (used by the Wolfhound and Avalon classes) fit into conventional missile tubes?

While I can't give exact dimensions, I can say that those missiles are somewhat smaller than Mk-13's, which theoretically means they could work in CA/BC tubes. I say "theoretically", because it's been my understanding from BuNine discussions that the launch tube inner surfaces aren't much larger in diameter than the missiles themselves. On my models, there is a clearance of only a centimeter or two between the missile body and and the inner surface of the tubes. I suppose a Mk-36 could get a permanent sleeve or discarding sabot enclosure to work in Mk-13 tubes.
That said, they are larger than what standard DD/CL tubes can handle, which of course, would mean you'd have to rip out existing tubes and replace them with larger tubes. I imagine it would also reduce magazine counts by 10% or so.
