Ohuhu Review Piece - 2 of 2(Much of this description will match the first image)
I've been meaning to try Ohuhu markers for a long time as I've heard fantastic things about them from artists I trust, but I could never justify getting them since I already had the top-of-the-line brand (Copic), so why get a set of the cheap stuff? But I've been wanting something to be able to play around with and not have to worry about damaging, so Β finally decided to treat myself and pick up their 60 pack of bullet nib (Oahu series) and 24 skin-tone back of brush nibs (Honolulu series.)
In short, I'm absolutely over the moon with them and recommend them a thousand times over, but we all know I can't keep things less than novel-length, so we have a more in-depth review below.
First off, and what most people probably really care about, is the price. Holy cow. The 60 pack is $35 CAD, taxes included, free shipping if you have Prime (which I thankfully had a friend who did). For comparison, if I wanted to walk to Michaels and get 60 Copic markers right now it would be over $500. Not only did it come with the 60 markers (making them 58 cents per marker), but the colourless blender is a free addition, so it's technically 61 markers, plus they come in a super handy zipper case to store them in, so you're not lugging around torn and water-damaged cardboard, AND they come with a sheet of vinyl to place between your paper and your desk so when the markers bleed through (as all alcohol markers do) you're not staining your work surface. So $35 gets you 61 markers, the storage case, and the protection sheet.
The brush markers are more expensive, but still dirt cheap compared to other alcohol marker brands. Once again, the colourless blender is a free addition and the carry case and vinyl sheet are included (and the larger the pack you buy the less you're paying per marker), so for the 24 skin tone set specifically it equates to $1.45 per marker. For that many Copics it would be over $200.
So price-wise, these are an absolute steal. And even though they're the bottom-of-the-barrel price, their quality is absolutely phenomenal, which I will be gushing about now:
The nibs are a huge factor when it comes to quality. One of the biggest issues with cheap brush markers is that the nibs start splitting and fraying after a while (unless you're Artist Loft, in which case it's after three brush strokes. I'm not bitter. I'm not still mad. I'M NOT.) Not only are these brush nibs holding up so far, but they have a super cool feature I don't think any other marker brand has! Once the brush nib wears down and you need to replace it, you can actually pull the nib out and switch it around and it has a new brush nib on the other side! So instead of buying replacement nibs (like for Copic) it already comes with a free replacement nib pre-installed! THESE ARE $1 PER MARKER?!?!
The bullet nibs are a little chunkier than I would like but they're also of good quality. (The first piece was only done with the bullet nibs as I was still waiting for the skin tones to arrive.)
As for the ink, the quality is fantastic. I wouldn't quite put it at Copic levels (just feels a toooooouch off) but I'd put them at 90% the quality at less than 10% the price, so absolutely worth it. A lot of cheap alcohol markers leave almost an oily texture on the paper, or are speckly, or get an unsettling mystery growth coming out of them after two uses (looking at you again, Artist Loft). These have none of those problems. The ink feels...thinner, if that makes sense? than Copic, but other than that every bit as good. On top of that, they were all very full (no dry/half-empty ones right out of the box; some were even over-filled if anything) and the ink doesn't have a strong smell to it (I've had some brands give me migraines due to the fumes but these were fine). I didn't notice the smell at all, but that might be because I use a lot of alcohol markers.
And for the main allure of alcohol markers: how well do they blend?
I did these pieces on my Artist Loft paper, which is just a touch less blend-able than my Strathmore, but they behaved just as well as the Copics did on the same surface. The bullet nibs take more work to blend with than the brush nibs do, but it's still very much possible. There are no blending issues from the ink.
For the miscellaneous:
-The colour selection for each set is very well thought out. I ended up with lots of colours and tones instead of having a bunch of super similar colours in one group and then sparse selection for others. The 60 set had a lot of light skin tones but not much of anything for dark skin tones (hence me buying the skin tone set), but there are lots of different pack options, so look at the colours to see what set matches what you like to draw.
-I normally avoid using the colour black for alcohol markers for a few reasons, one of which being that the ink tends to just sit on top of the paper and looks oily instead of being absorbed. The black for this marker set actually lays down REALLY smoothly (as we can see in the stained glass).Β
-The company only sells these through Amazon. I'm personally not a fan of Amazon so would rather have bought directly from Ohuhu, but c'est la vie.
-The colours didn't match the caps very well. Some were close, but others were completely off. I've heard they've gotten really good at this so I might have ended up with an older set (the barrel did look like their original version for the bullet nibs). It's not a huge deal, but more of a "make sure you swatch them instead of just going by the caps" warning.
-I received a "Buttercup Yellow" in each set and they have "Buttercup" spelled three different ways ("Buttercup" on one marker, "Bettercup" on one marker and one swatch sheet, and "Buctercup" on the other swatch sheet). I don't consider this so much a problem as I consider it adorable, and is another reason I think I might have gotten an older set.
-They don't sell refills, which is one of the things I like about Copics, and they only offer a few specific markers to buy individually, so if you run out of one colour you'd have to re-buy the whole set to get it again. (My recommendation would be to buy a set, and as you run out of your favourite colours replace them with a more expensive brand that IS refillable since it is apparent you use that colour a lot).
So the final verdict?
I 100% recommend these without hesitation.
These would be the perfect gift for a budding artist who wants to get into markers (whether pre-teen or adult) with different pack sizes for different price points (anywhere from $20 for 40 markers to the full 320 marker set for $170), as well as for someone who has a few of the more expensive brand but wants to branch out their colour selection without taking out a mortgage. One of the most daunting things about getting into markers is the price, and these are a fantastic entry-point. $35 for 60 might seem steep if you're not used to buying markers, but for $35 I could get 4 Copics, so that shows just how good of a deal you're getting. It's also about what you'd pay for one of those "mixed media art kits" that have all the quality of a used shoelace, so if you're going to spend that much I'd definitely recommend these instead.
These feel like the Winsor&Newton Promarkers, which are what actually got me into markers to begin with (5 years ago oh my gosh WHYYYYYY). The Promarkers are also 10 times the price but the quality is near identical.
If you're looking to get into markers (or help someone else get into markers), I recommend buying a set of these (whichever set fits your/their needs) and replacing the colours with Copics or another refillable brand as they run out, so it's not a huge investment all at once and you don't have to spend the full $8-10 on a colour that you use once every six months.
I honestly can't speak highly enough about these. I am absolutely blown away with their quality in and of itself, but when comparing that to the price they're selling for it's jaw-dropping. I bought these so I could stuff some markers in my pocket to bring to work with me without worrying about damaging them and they have exceeded every hope and expectation I had for them.
320/10 would recommend.
