The next in the Unconventional Mermaids series is one of my favourite creatures of the sea, the bobbit worm.

"Aren't you supposed to be doing other things?"
I am working on other things! Just because these are the only things I'm posting doesn't mean they're the only things I'm drawing. I just don't post 90% of my practice works.

This was one of the ones I was most excited to do, and while I'm happy with the line work, the colouring leaves a lot to be desired. The blending's not great as I keep forgetting how to use this specific paper, but I'm almost out so it won't be a problem any more. When I went to add the cast shadow on the background I realized I'd completely screwed myself over due to the light source, pose, and tail, and I did what I could, but in the end it's just...weird. I'm really tempted to re-colour it, but a) I hated colouring that tail with every fibre of my being, and b) I already have the next two in the series sketched and ready to colour, so I really shouldn't waste any more time on it.

That being said, I'm thrilled with the shape of the hair. I've been trying to wrap my head around the form of long hair and adding dimension for a few months now and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. I basically thought "if this was a figurine, what would the hair look like?" and that helped a lot. (Deciding on the hair style that would go well with the horns and spines took forever, but I think the long pony tail ties it together well.) While the iridescence on the tail fell short, the shine hair turned out a little better.

"What's with the diamond freckles?"
She's a polychete worm. I covered her in polygons.

All in all, I am dissatisfied with this. I took a couple steps forward in some areas but a few really big steps back in others. All we can do now is learn from it as we work on the next one.
