Gouache attempt #2! This time a scene from Howl's Moving Castle.

My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach on this one, and I might have bit off WAY more than I can chew. But a week later, it's done! There's lots I'd change, but all around I'm pretty happy with it.

Areas I want to improve:

-Colour mixing/matching (seeing the finished piece next to the original I'm seeing some key temperature differences)

-Cloud texture (I redid that sky so many times but ended up eventually giving up )

-Fine-lining (though I sincerely think this might be an issue of tools rather than skill; the paint keeps clogging the nibs and leads to thicker/sloppier line art)

I feel like my method of shading/texturing the rocks is very different from the original but I really like how I did them so I think I might actually be developing my own style there. Progress!

-Himi Gouache Overview/Thoughts-

I've tried a few different gouaches in the past and I've wanted to like them but something always just felt...uncomfortable? For me? But these ones just work. I think having them in tubs instead of tubes really makes a difference - I can see all of my colours at once and grab directly from them instead of looking at swatch cards. It also means that if I accidentally take out too much paint I can put it back, so long as I haven't mixed any other colours in yet. I have a habit of getting out way too much paint, so this is super handy.

These are dirt cheap compared to standard gouache, AND there's a lot of it. Most tubes of gouache have 12-15ml of paint, but each of these cups has 30ml. I almost dropped the palette when I first received it because it was WAY heavier than I was expecting. Both of those factors means I'm not worrying about wasting paint when I work, making this the perfect set to learn with.

There's a liiiiiittle bit of a smell (similar to finger paint you'd use in elementary school), but the consistency is really nice, and while some colours are a little more transparent then others the opacity is generally decent.

I don't have any professional gouache experience (I mean, acrylic gouache maybe, but I haven't used it much), so I can't give a solid comparison between it and higher quality stuff, but if you're a beginner like me then I absolutely recommend it.

I got the 24 pack on sale so it came to about $30 CAD (also came with some pretty great brushes, a mixing palette, and the container). There's also an 18 pack option which I've heard great things about, as well as a 56 pack I've heard not-so-great things about, but I feel like the 24 pack is the perfect amount for me.

All in all, I really enjoy using these, and I'd give them a 9/10, losing the point for the smell alone.

I know they sell individual refills in China (where the company is based) but can't seem to find them anywhere online, so I'm going to try my luck at getting a refill for white but other than that just use them until I have to replace the whole palette.

I also hope to do a 3-colour-challenge with these in the future, so maybe look forward to that! I need to finish off this commission slot set first, though. I'm telling myself I'm not allowed to play with these again until the last two commission slots are done.
