Description hello~ I'm alive~ working on several things simultaneously~

I recently discovered using the Linework layer on SAI but I talked to many who didn't know the tool at all or are uncomfortable with it.

So, I decided to play around with it and just took down a few notes as I went through.

I'm still figuring out what's the best way to use this layer too.. so I may no know all the answers if you still have questions~

------------------------------

I hope this is helpful to anyone who's new and wants to try the linework layer! ;u;/

the drawing is something of a wip, hopefully i'll finish it sometime this week.. maybe...

Sweet tutorial! I know this was probably posted forever ago but I honestly had no clue what the linework layer did before my friend showed me this. Thank ya for putting this together!

Hello!! I stumbled across this tutorial whilst looking for help, sorry I know this is an old post but I'm hoping someone or you could help me with my problem. Just recently my linework layers of my old works when they are closed and opened again to work on don't act like the linework layer. What I mean is, I can't use the different pen tool from that of a regular layer, the options for pressure and edit and whatnot do not show, but instead it just has the tools for a regular layer. I don't know if there's any way to fix this because I haven't come across any solutions but if there's any possible way I can make it work as an actual linework layer, then how do I do it? Because I don't want to have to trace over my original linework and start again to finish the drawings if I can help it, thank you!!

hello hello! So sorry for the slow response, but were you able to figure out your issue? It sounds like they weren't saved as lineart layers but rather just normal layers.

Is there any way to erase in a linwork layer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayoujii In reply to WilfurTheWicked [2017-07-19 23:10:52 +0000 UTC]

i think so. There should be an Eraser tool next to the Pen tool. Keep in mind, you're not erasing the lines but the points instead. The lineart layer is a like a connect-the-dots layer. You remove the point, you remove the line to get to that point.

I got it. Why doesn't like work layer 1 have a pen and eraser?

Sorry, your comment is really difficult to figure out without seeing what your screen is.
Is 'layer 1' a lineart layer or a normal layer? The normal layer should also have an eraser but might be harder to find because there are far more tools you can use.

I have to set up two lineart layers and the second lineart layer is the one that has the pen and eraser while lineart layer 1 doesn't.

mayoujii In reply to WilfurTheWicked [2017-07-20 01:49:47 +0000 UTC]

is there a way for you to take a screenshot of what you're seeing?
If i have two lineart layers up like that my screen looks something like this gyazo.com/6c99053ff02097769d06… If i toggle between layer 1 and 2 and tools on the right side do not change.
Sorry, i'm just a SAI user myself so I don't know all the issues the program could have.

This is like.. really old.. but i have a question.. is there any way to change the texture of the line? like the spread brush or like the watercolor brush?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayoujii In reply to xXturquoiseXx [2017-05-31 22:04:30 +0000 UTC]

hmm, not 100% sure but when i was picking it up, it didn't have too much customization in terms of type of brush. Its purpose is mainly to just create really crisp vector drawn lines. Anything more expression, I defaulted back to using the regular brushes. Sorry for not being much help!

xXturquoiseXx In reply to mayoujii [2017-05-31 22:33:05 +0000 UTC]

erfg.. it's not your fault!
I can't really use the default brushes because i don't have a drawing tablet yet, so i'm forced to use a trackpad
ehh i can just wait for a tablet! Thanks anyway! <3

I know this is probably very old, but is there any way to set the linework tool so it functions like the binary pen? I love the look of the binary pen, but would love to use the linework tool without it looking like the regular pen tool.

mayoujii In reply to GlitchInTime [2017-04-22 02:21:18 +0000 UTC]

sorry for the late late reply! Hmm do you mean in terms of turning of anti aliasing? I haven't played with it in a while, but because the lineart tool uses vectors and doesn't draw the same lines like a brush or the binary tool, I'm not exactly sure. I can play around with it again when i get the chance, but I currently don't know if there's a way to toggle it. ;3;/ so sorry!

I have a question, I have 2 layers; one for the sketch and one for the linework, I was using a separate layer for the linework layer, then when I saved and quit, then when I went back to my drawing, I found both the separate layers merged! I don't know what happened, but now i can't erase my base/sketch layer ;-; do you know the problem?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayoujii In reply to SakuraiChuu [2017-01-01 19:32:31 +0000 UTC]

oh no!! I've never ran into an issue where the layers are saved merged. When trying to save do you use shortcut keys? (ctrl+s for save). The shortcut key to merge is ctrl+e so is there a possibly you've accidentally hit the wrong shortcut? I know SAI has a setting to create temporary .tmp files, but you might have to do a bit of research for I've never recovered with them before. So sorry I couldn't be of much help.

i have a question.. its pixelated when you zoom in is there a way to fix it? thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayoujii In reply to astig211 [2016-11-12 18:15:47 +0000 UTC]

hello and thanks for asking! How much are you zooming? The line tool does have anti aliasing (smoothing effect) so zooming up close will make it look fuzzy. If you're looking for aliasing lines, you might be limited to using the binary tool on a normal layer.

or you can just use mouse tool and click ctrl + left click to drag or make a single point in any line you make. and also alt + left click to delete a point or a line between two point. shift + left click to drag the lines between two points or a single point. actually a combination of ctrl + shift or ctrl + alt or shift + alt or ctrl + alt + shift is somehow almost everything you need. you can see what combination in edit tools btw~ lol XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zanz-kami In reply to albinoespeon [2016-09-21 15:30:46 +0000 UTC]

that depends on what are you trying to do. if you combine 2 points that actually make it a single loop line then you can't. but if you want to combine 2 point and still make it a single line then you can. ctrl + shift and drag the point to another point you want to combine with mouse tools.

great tut thank you..question i clicked something now all my strokes are red wen i try to edit the points and if i try to move any points it moves my whole lineart what have i done lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Zanz-kami In reply to bxBLAZExd [2016-09-21 15:36:14 +0000 UTC]

First, to unselect your line that became red just simply ctrl + right click with mouse tools.
if you ctrl and left click on a canvas (not a point or line in linework layer) to select some line in specific area, you can either duplicate it with ctrl + shift + left click on line between two points or ctrl + t to drag it around or simply resize it. hope this helps

I don't have my computer with SAI atm but from what it sounds like, the red means that all those points has been highlighted. Before you start dragging them around, make sure only the points you want to move are red. Try some of the options that drag a single point or use the select tool to highlight the specific set of points you want to drag.

Best of luck and I hope you figure it out soon!

I have a problem that maybe you can help me with??? I bumped something and now my line work is too wide?? the weight is the exact same, but everything is thick and chunky now

mayoujii In reply to luxlier [2016-06-03 22:56:43 +0000 UTC]

Hmm it's hard to understand exactly what you're experiencing. Can you send a picture of what's going on? I haven't touched the library tool in a while, buy outside of weight, there's also pressure that changes thickness around only a single point. Have u checked if that has been changed? Good luck!
