I didn't want to clog you guys with deviations yesterday, so I waited to upload this. (if you wondered why there was no walkthrough for that picture, this is the reason why)

My present to you guys for being awesome and supporting me <33 and for (almost) 200 watchers! hurrah~

So this is basically how I do my lines. All the time. (I am a creature of habit!) I vary the process slightly depending on the picture and what suits it best, but this is essentially how I roll I tried to be as in depth as possible, because it bothers me when tutorials are basically just a picture walkthrough with words.

so yay! hope it's of some use to you :3

I don't use the pen tool, I have always drawn my lineart freehand as I feel in more control and I can apply those skills to my traditional works (there is no pen tool for traditional art!).

So It is always a joy to find others who do lineart freehand, as it feels like pretty much everybody uses the pen tool and praises it as the best.

This was a fascinating read into seeing how you do your process, I found that bit about being right handed or left handed really interesting . and drawing the lineart as a bigger file, then resizing it to colour. I usually work on a big file but for all of it, lineart and colours! So I will certainly try this .

yeah I never really understand why so many people praise the pen tool... unless you know how to use it really well, your lines will end up looking super stiff and flat.
Team freehand lineart! ahahah

I hope the tutorial works out for you ^^

Yeah, some people can do amazing art with it and sometimes it does help them even more if they have a medical problem with their wrist, like carpel tunnel or something.

But I think my problem is that just SO many people use it!, call it more professional and if you freehand, it seems to be deemed as amateurish >.<.

It will certainly be an excellent thing to learn from .

On the other hand I found something makes tablet use phenomenally easier: Put drawing paper on top of the tablet. TRY IT!!! It changes EVERYTHINGGGGG

How long does it usually take for you to do lineart?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

caydett In reply to Blue-Hybrid [2013-08-05 06:13:28 +0000 UTC]

hmmm... it depends on the complexity of the picture and how distracted I am while doing the lines...

but usually between 30 minutes to 1 hour or so. Some pictures take upwards of 2 hours though >_>;

Yeah, I would love that a lot! I use a tablet and I am not exactly neat with the lines so I use the pen tool a lot, I just want a tut that will teach me how to do it really effectively like most of your other tutorials

I'm having troubles and such with lineart, so when I think I'll be reffering to this tutorial soon.

By the way, what do you reccomend for things like cirles and that, like cartoony eyes and such? Becuase that's my biggest problem, I can't connect the ends properly, do you reccomend strokes for that too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

caydett In reply to SuperKoopaTroopa [2010-05-03 16:55:32 +0000 UTC]

awesome ^^

circles... like perfect circles?
I recommend strokes for ANY type of line that doesn't have to be 'perfect,' simple because they are much easier to create more organic and natural looking shapes with.
for a perfect circle, I usually draw the circle in using the pen tool or something during the sketch stage, and then go over the sketch with freehand when i'm doing lineart so that the shape will be correct, but the lines won't have that 'mechanical' feel that the pen tool gives.
For the kind of cartoony eyes that I see in your gallery, it's easy to do freehand if you just break the shape up into smaller segments. for right handed people, drawing the lower left curve of a round shape is the easiest (lower right for lefties) so flipping or rotating your picture can also be a big help :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SuperKoopaTroopa In reply to caydett [2010-05-10 14:20:30 +0000 UTC]

Well I've been giving the strokes method a try... and it really isn't working out. It might be because I'm using GIMP, but I can't even connect the lines of each stroke unless I do it painfully slow, and then the lines don't turn out good...
