Anime for this manga: [link]

6 MB file, it might take a while for some.

PS: If you are using wireless, the sound is likely to be mis-matched to the sequence. i hope not...

Updated with sound. Not everything match up the way I wanted, but this gives a better idea how it will look.

I like sharing unfinished animation.... because each of them takes so freakish long to finish. (This is almost like... sharing my comic sketches before they become official pages, but oh well, it's got very little story to it, no spoiler.)

Note: Some parts of the animation will feel too fast or too slow, that's because it's a WIP, the timing is still in progress too, trust me the finished version will be properly timed.

Flash 8-CS3

Time: 1 min 30 seconds rough out

Wip 1: 12/23/07 ---3 hours so far

WIP 2: 6-8 hours?

WIP4: 9/17/08--- lost count...

WIP5: 9/23/08- gah, I didn't know how to do missiles fire, had to research on youtube. I didn't feel like I accomplished much. Thankfully I finished None's 270 degree turn plus zoom out! (There's some stuff to fix, I will clean it up with pencil and paper.)

WIP6: 9/27/08- I finished 90% of the missile firing scene, (its still a bit too fast but) yay~~ Thank you Zoids. T_T It was easier than I thought though... so few drawings yet the speed can make it look so cool easily..... erm. I am not bragging. I hope.
None's cannon energy gathering and firing is a lot more trouble-some. I over animated.... right now it's.... barely working, I think that scene needs to be longer.
The hard part is a lot of the animation is too smooth...

WIP7: Animated a few of the last scenes before I ran out of steam....

WIP10: 10/18/08 Skipped a week, now it's WIP 10.
Animated the most troubling sequence this weekend.... Sc 09 where Ko grow his wings, and Sc 17 where None's arm gets cut.
Then fixing up more timing and subtle areas... There's still alot to work on.
GAWD they were HARD! It's not just the drawing, it took me a while to get the timing too. T_T

Right now I can say I am fairly satisfied with those two scenes, I still want to rework into Ko's growing wing sequence. (Flash rendered the sound off for some reason, but its WIP so i'll let it go.)

------------------------

"Don't Linger"

[piano]
I found your footsteps etched in the sand
and followed them here to a dry, thirsty land

I call your name, but (still) you turn away
Please, don't forget what I told you today

Open your eyes and awake to sunrise
Don't linger in (your) empty dreams

[guitar]
I traced your path to a dead, barren sea
and found a storm brewing all around me

The wind tears our voices away
You cannot hear what I say

[flute/lesley guitar]
f 10 Deeper and deeper, the whirlpool draws down
lg10 You, fallen prince, with your broken crown
f 10 Open your eyes and awake to sunrise
lg11 See me here calling, reaching for you (oh)

f 11 Where are you now? your image fades to black
lg 10 The world burns around us; the clock won't turn back
f 11 I've carried my words across all these years
lg 10 Look up and listen; tell me what you hear

[flute - closing]
f 9 open your eyes, awake to sunrise
f 9 let me see you reach out now for me
f 9 (oh) don't linger in empty dreams

looks really action packed and has some nice eye candy shots! Looking forward to this one a lot. So far so good, it's even a better treat than usual show opening because it has more animation content-hehe, since some shows like to just have panning still images.

One suggestion on the spinning camera shot would be to move the camera in a direction ever so slightly while the bg is spinning, since it feels too flat and not like they are really flying in that space if you just have it spin only... anything to keep the horizon from being perfectly in the center spinning in the center of the screen for the duration of that shot. It's ok to start in the middle but a movement from there would be cool!... not too much movement, it can be like a nice hand held camera with weight kind of shot.

Also- on the rotation shot of the mech, it may be cool to just keep the camera moving rather than stopping twice, but it would be more animation. >.<

Well- it's looking really great, those animated shots are so cool!

You and Dan always come up with some wonderful suggestions to my animation that requires a lot more work. XD

lol- I always will believe you can do it though, even though its more work haha. Even if you don't do that though I still think your doing great.

mayshing In reply to Gingashi [2008-09-20 19:22:13 +0000 UTC]

also, to add, there's going to be a moving background right after the first rotation shot.
(I probably should do a tighter storyboard.... but I tend to like it loose so I can add to it later)

mayshing In reply to Gingashi [2008-09-20 19:02:01 +0000 UTC]

good suggestion. I was thinking there's a need for slightly panned camera to add to the animation depth too, that suggestion helps.

For the rotation in the beginning, there's actually a zoom out between the two moving shot, but I just didn't want to do it in flash, I would do it in AF, I will try to see whether I need to move any part of None to add to it, right now I just need to finish all the rough outs first.

Originally I even want a transition from the first scene when None's eyes appear to lead to the next, where he starts rotating, after thinking about it, that's a bit too much to bear at the moment, as I still have the rest of the animation, another 30 secs to finish. D:

at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours, you can do it too.
Just depends on whether you want it bad or not.

...It might be better to just take a course in college right? Right now, I'm debating whether to become a mangaka or an animator.

I could even do both.

mayshing In reply to itena [2008-09-20 19:15:22 +0000 UTC]

no doubt you could do both.
Though I am really sticking to manga,
I took animation because i recongize thats the next step for manga,
there's quite a lot of difference to it other than just bringing life to the picture.
So it's good to learn animation, I recommend it.

School helps, it may be costly, but it speeds up the learning process,
but make sure you tour the school and understand the classes and what they do,
you don't want to get into a school that will drive you nuts in a bad way, that would be a waste of money.

It's a good thing I live in Vancouver; the industry's booming over here, including the schools.

Well, first I need to graduate highschool I'll get my Dogwood in 2010.

Woah really? We definitely don't have that; in fact, the requirements to graduate have been getting higher and higher.

Like the Graduation Transitions Program; where there's things like volunteer work, physical activity, credits, etc.(Can't remember the rest)

There used to be the Graduation Portfolio, which was rather hellish; thank God it became Grad Trans instead(The portfolio even included an interview! D

good. ^_^
Animation is pretty intense, in my opinion harder than manga, because there's more aspect to pay attention to, but knowing manga helps with animation storyboarding process, and builds the speed needed for animation.

Hmm, your description mentions music, but I don't hear anything. So I guess you just haven't added it yet?
Anyway, this is just amazing. I just can't imagine how people make animations like these. I envy your skills. I can tell the finished version will be beautiful. The WIP alone makes me want to see this as a complete anime.

I like your roughs. I can't wait to see the fight scene against Luke and between None and KoLei though, they look like the best part of the animation so far (as an interest thing, not technical). :3 The opening bit with None is pretty awesome. No Jeremy and Mosa though?

But anyway, the way Lien is walking away from Angel seems strange. I've watched it a few times and it seems like he should be leaning forward a little more as opposed to use kicking his feet forward to move.

mayshing In reply to upload-image-here [2008-09-16 22:58:45 +0000 UTC]

I have about 6 seconds left... I will see whether I can put Jeremy and Mosa in a quite shot, if other clips don't require more time.

"But anyway, the way Lien is walking away from Angel seems strange. I've watched it a few times and it seems like he should be leaning forward a little more as opposed to use kicking his feet forward to move."

eeeeh.... you got a point there. It would probably be more natural if he leaned forward more in that shot, but right now I don't want to re-animate that whole scene. I will see whether I will leave it alone or come back to it later.

upload-image-here In reply to mayshing [2008-09-17 22:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh, no, I understand what a hassle it would be. But I didn't think it was right to compliment but not point that out. It's really looking great otherwise, and is a minor thing overall.

And yay! if you can get Jeremy and Mosa in there! They're somewhat important characters so I was surprised that they weren't there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to upload-image-here [2008-09-19 00:42:00 +0000 UTC]

originally I was worried I couldn't even squeeze in Randy and Luke. But I already animated those sequences so I just slapped it in anyway, even if it kind of opens up questions for a short film like this.

Jeremy's getting his own animation done for my forth year, but for Edepth, their appearance would probably be about.... a quick 1-2 sec shot. Thank you for your support.

I am fine with people pointing out my mistakes, as long as they come from a good point of view, and a good heart.
I am equally as blunt anyway. XD

I think I won't be fixing the walk, because overall I am fairly happy with the animation. I will definitely keep your point in mind for future walk cycles. ^_^

upload-image-here In reply to mayshing [2008-09-19 06:19:51 +0000 UTC]

Like I said, it's relatively minor overall. But yeah. You have talent for animation and it's way more than what I can do.

Keep on keepin' on, I guess, hahahaha.

Have you ever tried using a stopwatch to figure out timing? I know that using a computer can seem so convenient, but (if you haven't tried it) you have no idea how useful walking around with a stopwatch can be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

mayshing In reply to keil [2008-09-16 20:35:14 +0000 UTC]

I find using flash to time it at different frame rate (since its easy to change framerate in flash) even easier than stopwatch, so i didn't consider the option. But stopwatch should be useful if I am acting out the poses I will be drawing.

I use stopwatch to time dialogues, and storyboard, but haven't used it beyond that.

It's the only inking program I know that lets me "turn" my canvas like how I zoom in photoshop. It has excellent lines, and have painting tool like open canvas.

I actually spent the money and bought a license for this program,
