Description
The title isn't going to make sense unless I tell you the hummingbird over the dragon is sticking out it's tongue tooAbout 25 hours total. Painter IX wacom intuos tablet. I wanted to play around with textures, especially in the background. This is a very different style background to what I usually make, so it was a good stretch for me. I loved LOVED using the sumi-e pen for the foliage (which is hard to see, I have that layer at about 50% opacity)
Thanks for looking, hope you're all enjoying your weekend

Very nice! The background makes the dragon stand out more. You don't often see playful (and dare I say "cute"?) dragons, so this is a welcome change!

I love this! It's so beautiful and playful at the same time. The simple colors and composition remind me of traditional Japanese paintings, but the characters are so playful! Beautiful job with the dragon... I love the blue shadows and the texture of its skin.

fantastic piece!! this dragon seems to have so many different, lovely colours that make her up that i just can't get over how much i envy that aspect. for a digital painting you did such a great job at showing the textures on her skin. i think that is the part of this piece that i have enjoyed the most as it makes me jump for joy that you were able to do something like that. the tree and hummingbirds are such a soft aspect of this piece that i love how it contrasts the other, harsher tones. really fabulous painting. :)

Thank you! What a nice comment
The textures on this were really interesting to work with, I'm amazed at how close to traditional effects some of the Painter brushes are I think this work was the first time I tried out the sponges and sumi brushes in the background...it could have been more polished, but it was fun just playing around with different effects, so I'm happy with it. It makes my day that you enjoyed it!

awesome painting! I love the texture of the dragon/dinosaur's skin! the eyes are a bit akward though maybe a bit too yellow? or maybe the pupils are bit too big? The hummingbirds are so cute!!!!

You're right I didn't want him to be a HUUUGE dragon, a bit bigger than a draft horse is what I had pictured in my mind. A young and saucy dragon

This is absolutely georgeous! I love the expression on his face, the details are so great. It's really showing how relaxed he is, playfull with that little bird, meaning no harm at all. Great work.
Also your other art is absolutely devine. You have one admirer more :^)

Oh wow... for some reason I only just saw this one... *head-desk* But I must say, it's simply gorgeous. And to be perfectly honest, the first thing I noticed in this was the textures, even in the small view the textures are very rich. The diversity in textures you have captured is amazing. And I must say that your style of dragon is beautifully unique. Usually you see people depicting dragons as huge beasts, but here, it's such a peaceful and calm, dragon. Reminds me of those old books, I forget what they are, but the style of them, the dragon is just so kind... I really like this if you hadn't yet noticed XD Congrats on a job really well done

Aw, thanks so much I really enjoyed painting this, I hadn't done a dragon in digital media yet, though I've loved drawing them over the years. It was also an experiment in textures, it's really interesting to see what textures I can get without using overlays or photo textures (not that I don't like them...I simply haven't expanded into that area yet!)
I wanted a personable size, but with a feeling of strength at rest So I'm really happy to read your comment, it makes me feel I've come close to what I intended

I think the textures turned out beautifully. You say it was an experiment, but it's like you've been doings paintings like this for years and years. And in my opinion with the dragon, that's exactly what you achieved

Thank you I think my work is becoming closer to traditional as I get used to using the different tools in Painter 9. Textures make the biggest difference, I think...they have some awesome textural media, like the charcoal/conte crayon/pastel brushes. They're so cool to work with

btw, [I've only just found this out myself] did you know, the Hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world?
It weighs 1oz, and it's the only bird that can fly backwards too!

Aw, thanks for your comments, I'm sorry I missed answering them until now! I've gotten my comments in a mess again and missed these
Hard to believe a bird who only weighs one ounce can have so much personality They're so cool...when we lived in the US we had a hummingbird feeder, it was amazing to heard them chirp! They didn't sound real.

weird, I enjoyed painting the background on this more than anything else. It was nice using some new brushes this time (the sumi-e and sponges were really interesting...and conte).

Well, it's always worth the challenge to try. But you have many other cool and neat looking birds in Australia. You have parrots, we don't get many of those in Nord Amerique.
