Description The title isn't going to make sense unless I tell you the hummingbird over the dragon is sticking out it's tongue too I'm sorry I just couldn't think of a title, so that'll have to do.

About 25 hours total. Painter IX wacom intuos tablet. I wanted to play around with textures, especially in the background. This is a very different style background to what I usually make, so it was a good stretch for me. I loved LOVED using the sumi-e pen for the foliage (which is hard to see, I have that layer at about 50% opacity)

Thanks for looking, hope you're all enjoying your weekend

Thank you! the sumi pen was really cool to work with, it's the first time I've used it. I'm itching to give it another go...it was a really nice quick way to add a little bit of texture without overworking things (but of course I NEVER overwork things *LOL sarcasm*!)

You have a new kitty? Aw, you're lucky!

Yes we have a new kitty... Her name is Cookie. Our Golden Retriver is 2 years old and her name is Monster. That was the deal if we got a kitty that I got to name her Cookie.. so when I take them to the vet and the receptionist asks who do we have here.. I can say... Cookie, Monster..
Thank goodness Monster is a sweetie.. because Cookie's real name should be Psycho. She is beginning to believe she is the boss and chases the dog all over. Monster will play with her nicely but sometimes Cookie gets carried away. So Monster gets a touch rougher and then Cookie goes walking off like it was her idea to stop. Monster weighs 75 lbs. Cookie is like 3 lbs. It is hillarious and better than tv to watch them.

Aw, thanks so much for your comment It was a nice 'break' piece to work on, I felt like I was getting in a rut with the Artemis painting I love these smaller works, they're just fun!

Oh, wow! The dragons skin looks so wrinkly and cool!
And I just love it's face

Thanks I used the experience of painting waterdragons a lot in this, the texture of the face and the wrinkley leathery skin were from that!

Absolutely stunning! The dragon is really, really cute. Only thing i can say is that the foliage seems to be too solid, like the rest of the painting seems to have the sketchy feel to it, and the branches and leaves kinda stick out funnily.

Hi Darron Good comment...hmm. Maybe a little 'in between' foliage that's mid ground between the soft background and more substantial foreground? Might do the trick I think it's a good idea, thank you...if I don't go back and edit I'll remember that in the next painting, I'd like to continue on with this style background a bit more. It's really interesting playing around with the textures and opacity like this.

Yeah, i think the texture gives it a really good effect. Defiantly worth doing some more of.

Thank you I used the experience of painting eastern gippsland waterdragons in past paintings a lot in this work, the skin folds were one thing that stood out to me while working on the 'realistic cousin' of this dragon

Gorgeous! I really like the textures, and all the hatching on the dragon. A contrast with the pretty little leaves and flowers.

Haha, I had a good weekend alright. Spent the whole day with driving practice.

Endearing, and yet not soppy-cute. I love the subtle exchange. And, of course, the awesome details on the dragon.

I am in love with this, he's so cute! That wing on the left looks less textured than everything else I think, but this is so stunning.

(oh and what's the sumi-e pen? is that in painter?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBoulad In reply to sovereign [2007-02-08 07:00:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I think you're right about the texturing on the left wing I want to go back and rework that area in a couple of days. Good crit!

The sumi pen is in Painter IX, yep...I guess a detail brush would work very similarly though, if used at high opacity

Aw, gee, I'm way late answering, sorry!

Yep, they have tongues! I guess they have to to drink the nectar out of the flowers

Nutlet94 In reply to MBoulad [2007-02-08 14:26:43 +0000 UTC]

Well then why do they need the long straw beaks? Couldn't they lick it out? Hmmm...
Hummingbird are so mysterious.

did you know, the Hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world - It weighs 1oz, and it's the only bird that can fly backwards too!
