Description Behold, the Dragonslayer!!! Made for a commission in 2009. The blade alone on this thing is five feet long with a foot long hilt. I felt pretty badass running around my backyard with this thing.
The Dragonslayer is constantly described as a hunk of iron, and it doesn't exactly look like Guts has been taking care of it, so I took care to scratch the crap out of the blade to make it look as if this had been through years of deflecting attacks and causing general gore and destruction. When I painted it, I highlighted the damage by using a light and dark silver, then brushing red on everything and using a scrap of linen to wipe it off. The effect gave it a very aged look with tarnish and stains. When I was planning this prop, I noticed in the reference pictures that the dark part of the blade was constantly portrayed with cross hatching or speckles, making me think that there needed to be a texture there. So, I got some acrylic texture glass beads and mixed the paste with acrylic paint and after a few layers, the dark portion had the look and texture of sandpaper, and gave it a really nice effect.
I'm super proud of this gorgeous thing, and the commissioner loved it. A good experience overall for making a prop I loved.
Made from insulation foam, paper clay, polyurethane, wooden dowels, Styrofoam, linen, acrylics, plastic beads, and glue.

wish they made one from actual steel, like right out of a real steel beam.

I know you do commissions, but I'm wanting to make one of these on my own. This will be my very first costume prop I ever make, can you give me any advice, or tips on making the DragonSlayer?

No prob, advice is always free! I'd recommend sandwiching a layer of plywood in between layers of pink insulation foam adhered with wood glue. Before you glue them together, cut a rectangle in the wood slightly larger than the dowel you're going to use for the handle so when you drill the foam it'll be a lot easier. The texture in the middle of the blade is made with a acrylic medium you add to paint that's filled with plastic balls, giving the final look of sandpaper without being nearly as unpleasant to touch. The grommel and half circle on the blade is made of more foam coated with paper clay, which makes the foam a lot tougher while still keeping it lightweight. You can also coat the blade with either coating resin or oil based polyurethane, you'll just have to make sure you don't get drips built up because they can be a pain to sand down.
Let me know if you need anymore help and I'll be happy to advice!

OMG! you just let the grass die didn't you? No but seriously awesome sword. I wonder if you could replace it for your possible lawnmower if you have one.

Lol, a lawn man, huh? Eh, this was at my parent's last place where we don't have sprinklers and this was well into the summer where we were getting 112 degree weather. It was insanity. My props were actually put to the weigh-side for a while because I was having heat stroke from being in my work tent, haha. Not to mention the heat was wreaking havoc on paints...
Oh yea, thanks for the compliment on the sword XD I liked it too.
