Description
GTFO my forest! My newest cosplay, San from Princess Mononoke. I've been a Ghibli Films fan for years, and it's really cool to finally cosplay one of Miazaki's characters. Taken at Kelly Park at the NorCal Picnic, Aug 2009.

Awesome! Word fail to describe how wondrously and how beautifully you pulled the character off!
Oh and that is one powerfully magnetic gaze you have there! Wow!!!

What an amazing cosplay! I'm actually in the process on making a cosplay of San now, I hope mine will turn out even half as good as yours! I'm having trouble with the pelt though. I can't seem to fnd a good way to attach the hood to the rest of the pelt. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, my pelt is double layered for optimum thickness and so people don't get to see the fabric backing from any angle. When I sew the main pelt, I leave the hood area open, then trim down the fur about a quarter inch in from the edge of the neckline and the hood, so it doesn't get caught and jam up the machine. Then I pin the hood into the pelt and simply sew it all down. The fur is long enough it hides the seam. Sewing this part is the most difficult because you're dealing with three layers of fabric and fuzz, but after that everything gets pretty damn easy haha

Ok, I think I see what you're saying. Sorry I'm pretty new to sewing. How many yards of the fur did it take for you to complete this with the double layer?

I think it took about 2 yards on a 60 inch bolt. I may be overestimating, but better safe than sorry, and at the worst you have left overs for sword wraps, costume trim, etc.

Checked your tutorial.. nvm on mask.
Still wondering how you did the armbands, headband, and attached ears /mask to fur....

meanlilkitty In reply to Kimberlyand [2012-10-03 03:34:01 +0000 UTC]
Well, regarding attaching the ears and mask to the fur, I basically just hotglued them. You'll have to cut the fur down before you attach the mask so it has a firmer grip. The ears I cut holes into the hood, slid them through and glued them into place. The ears are made of pink insulation foam that are sanded into shape, coated with gesso, and painted. The arm and head bands are leather strips connected with magnetic purse clasps, found from Joannes. The one on the head has a bead made from leftover sculpty that I superglued into place. The necklace is made with leather string and sculpty beads, and i knotted the ends and sewed them directly into the pelt, so the entire thing goes over like a cape. Let me know if you have any questions!

Great great cosplay! I was wondering how much the faux fur costed?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
meanlilkitty In reply to KH-LoZ-er [2012-08-22 17:27:17 +0000 UTC]
Well a great faux fur usually costs about 16-25/yard, so I think I spent roughly $40 for the pelt

Thank you! I bought this fabric off if eBay from a seller called The Furs Master, but he doesn't seem to be in business anymore. If you look online fir it or happen to have a fabric district near you, look for a three to four inch pile faux fur. Off white is usually best since the pure white tends to bleach in photos and you don't get to see how nice the fur is. Oh, you'll need about two yards if the bolt is 60 inches wide and you can expect to spend 16-25/yard for it

Hands down, Best San cosplay I've ever seen. You're the only one I've noticed who actually did the perfect facial expression, where as everyone else looks clueless or is smiling like it's family picture time. Very nice my dear. Breath taking <3

I love the fur you used on your mask. It so fluffy compared to the other San cosplays I've seen. Where'd you find it?

meanlilkitty In reply to Eddie-chan [2012-01-28 21:24:10 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! This fur I got in the fashion district in la, but the same kind if fabric can even be found on eBay. Just look for a three to four inch pile and expect to pay 17-25/yard and you can get some great fabric. I even keep the scraps around for other projects, the fluff tends to hide any seams

looks great,
lackerwork helmet i gues?
would have been more convincing if:
A: you rubbed dirt over your body
B: ketchup on your mouth (blood)
C: you were asian
you nailed the outift, and the look in her eyes though

meanlilkitty In reply to wardude69 [2012-01-16 06:36:14 +0000 UTC]
Well I guess we'll just have to pretend that San just bathed in the river and hadn't eaten some raw animal. Also, Miyazaki made up the character's names, history, and world. There isn't really much to say if the cast is traditionally "Asian". He is inspired by, but not necessarily writing from Japanese history. Either way, since San is a orphan, not to mention has blue eyes, there's not much to suggest that she is Asian either way. Thanks otherwise, I guess. The helmet is paper mache coated with paper clay.
