Description GTFO my forest!
My newest cosplay, San from Princess Mononoke. I've been a Ghibli Films fan for years, and it's really cool to finally cosplay one of Miazaki's characters. Taken at Kelly Park at the NorCal Picnic, Aug 2009.

Wow that is not only a great costume but a great picture. It could be a promo pic for a live action movie.

This is beautiful! How much did it cost you to make it?

Thank you! Hmmm, it's been over a year...The mask and ear prolly cost $15 to make, $20 for the wig, $8 for the red Ben Nye makeup, the material for the pelt was $50 (though I had a lot left over), $3 for the earrings, $4 for leather straps, $8 for the magnets on the leather straps, the materials for the dress, overshirt, and shoes was about $20 (I got some high-quality linen).

The pelt is faux fur with a four inch pile. I found a merchant online who i ordered from, but typically i would reccomend finding a fabric district to buy from. Its typically cheaper and its always nice to know what you're buying

where did you get the fur for the mask

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

meanlilkitty In reply to XjennypennyX [2010-11-22 04:13:57 +0000 UTC]

Ebay. I actually got my fur from a seller called "thefursmaster" on ebay...His name is...odd...but he was a good seller, tho a bit pricey. Though for a good faux fur, you can prolly expect to pay between $20-$25 per yard on it. Basically when shopping for the fur, try to find something with a three to four inch pile (length of fur), it'll help give it a more realistic look and feel. I recommend looking for something in a camel, ivory, or off white. If you go for a stark white, it'll look less realistic (because anything white in nature gets dirty fast) and it'll also bleach out in pictures, and the long pile detail will get lost.
Expect to buy about two to three yards (depending on how wide the fabric is). To make the pelt, I simply cut two large uneven pieces, kinda giving it that skinned animal look, and spent a good deal of time sewing them together with my machine. Sew the pieces inside out, and in the last few inches stop and flip it inside out, then sew the last few inches closed. I also had a couple inches going over each shoulder and sewed my San necklace into it so I could throw the pelt on like a cape.

Haha, yes I did make it myself. I do commissions if you are interested. Hell, even if you don't cosplay the character, it'd always look nice hanging from a wall. I've gotten it into my head to make a bunch of different masks from video games and manga and have them as wall decorations. Lol I'm thinking of doing all 30 of "Majora's Mask" masks.

Haha, I'm not exactly the kind to jealously guard my secrets and successes. XD On a funny note, my pelt is so authentic, I have to periodically groom it for weeds! Oh, and you should probably look for something in a camel, ivory, or off white.
Ah, I just realized you didn't ask how I made it, just where I bought the fur...XD Well, hope any of this helps, and let me know if you need any more help.
