Description GTFO my forest!
My newest cosplay, San from Princess Mononoke. I've been a Ghibli Films fan for years, and it's really cool to finally cosplay one of Miazaki's characters. Taken at Kelly Park at the NorCal Picnic, Aug 2009.

Could you tell me how you stuck the fur to the mask? i read someone elses cosplay comments and they said they attached it to the top not the mask...? and also could you tell me what you made the ears out off and how they were stuck on?

Sorry but this one is really the best one and i want mine to be really good

^.^

Hot glue. Plain-ass hot glue XD I literally just trimmed the pelt down where the mask was going to attach and hot glued the crap out of it. The heat from the glue melted the fibers and adhered it even more. The ears are made from flower-grade styrofoam that I sanded the crap out of to make the right shape, then coated with paper clay. After the clay dried, I sanded it smooth, painted with acrylics, and sealed. To get them in the hood I basically cut holes for each of the ears, yanked them through, and screwed a piece of cardboard into the bottoms in case the ears got rebellious and tried to leave. Then....MOAR hot glue! Then I sewed the hood into the pelt.

....Did that make any sense? I don't know anymore...

This is amazing! Where did you get the fur? and what's the mask made out of? I'm cosplaying her too, I hope mine ends up as good as yours did!

meanlilkitty In reply to NoirOngiri [2011-11-15 06:43:48 +0000 UTC]

The fur I got on ebay, it's a faux fur with a four inch pile. The mask is paper mache coated with paper clay with wooden napkin ring holders for the eyes and mouth. I'll be making a new one for a commission soon, so I'm gunna make a tutorial soon enough (I say that but I've delayed this commission for like two months, haha)

THANK YOU!! =] i am going to the midlands anime convention, and after lots and lots of thinking i am going to go as San, I came across these pictures (which are great!) and now that i have read your comments on how you have made the mask etc, it really helps

what did you use as the fur? Ahh it really is awesome!!!

This is the best one I've seen! Did you make the mask with Sculpey as well and then paint it? Also, any particular place/store you recommend for the faux fur?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meanlilkitty In reply to imcholly [2011-10-09 05:59:52 +0000 UTC]

Aw thanks! Actually the mask I made by paper mache-ing over a plastic bowel, then after I got 15+ layers, I pulled it off the bowl and covered all sides with paper clay, then used pure paper clay for the details (except for the eyes/mouth, those are wood napkin ring holders). After the clay dried, I'd recommend sanding it smooth (I didn't do a very good job, which is why it's a bit lumpy), then paint it, then seal it. If you use something with a high gloss, I'd give it a light sand to get rid of the gloss, cuz...why would San have gloss sealer...? Admittedly I didn't do this (yet), and that's why my mask is so shiny.
I don't suppose I have any retailers per say to recommend, but what you should look for is something off-white with a three to four inch pile, typically between 18-28 per yard. Ebay works enough, and that's where I got this material. If you happen to be in/near LA, there's the Fashion District in the downtown, which has miles of fabric stores that sell thousands of bolts, there you will find variety and the best price. Otherwise, avoid Joannes and any other namebrand store since they typically have a 200% markup, and use the internet or find the fabric district near you.

Everything I made out of Sculpty. The teeth I used a off white and a white and rolled them together so it got a nice marbling. Sculpty can be pretty amazing when treated right

Any tips on how to make the beads and using sculpty? I've never worked with or heard of the stuff b4.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meanlilkitty In reply to xxx-Momo-Shikiro-xxx [2011-09-04 04:13:39 +0000 UTC]

Naw, it's just like clay. It's hard when you take it out of the package, warm it with your hands by kneading it, or toss it in the microwave for a few seconds. When you're buying the sculpty, make sure it doesn't look too dry or cracked, that means it's too old. For the blue, just roll them like you were trying to make a snake, then impale them on a stick to make the hole a little bigger than the width of the string you're using. When you're happy with the shape, you bake it at 300 degrees for 15-25 minutes. Easy peasy!

i have to say, the sculpity i bought was annoyingly hard, so i used crayola air dry clay XD i have to say your's is the best full mask i have seen :3

meanlilkitty In reply to xxx-Momo-Shikiro-xxx [2011-11-12 22:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well at least you found something that works. There is a solution you can put into sculpty so it kneads softer, and if all else fails, you can actually nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds. And thank you again for your compliments! I took a lot of pride in her and I'm so jazzed she turned out. I have some modifications I'm gunna do on her, but in general I'm so happy.
