Description

I found another thing to scratch off my bucket list. A larva of net-winged beetle Lygistopterus sanguineus. Normally they spend their time in dead wood, so they're quite elusive. But I found this one on the surface, it was probably changing to more favorable location and I borrowed it for a while before returning it to its place.

Larvae aren't usually the most interesting subjects for photography, but I'd say this is the very definition of exception. That leathery texture and that orange segment give it quite the character. So unlike the typical white or beige blob.

Incidentally if you thought that the orange segment was its head, you'd be mistaken. I don't blame you, as it draws attention, which might be a form of defense.
