Description : Made alterations to the composition at someone's advice

-----------
:butterflytwo:Theme:
A sort of double portrait... Queen Elizabeth the 1st and explorer (some would say, pirate) Sir Francis Drake (only he's in the boat, so bear with me here please ) In her reign, Elizabeth's fleet was formidable and Francis Drake brought many riches from his pillaging of spanish ships in the Americas. Drake was knighted for his circumnavigation of the earth... and doubtlessly it pleased the Queen too that he brought home to England oodles of gold and riches.

Since so many have expressed a curiosity regarding my digital collages, I posted a detail tutorial/step by step of the creation of this image on my blog. Please have a look dears.

I prefer the term privateer for Sir Francis Drake. Also noticed lots of art of Elizabeth shows her mouth closed. I wonder why? (Not really I know why.)

On that note very interesting look to her. Her expression is very piercing, good work.

The extreme majority of historic portraits have the sitters mouth closed, far from just Elizabeth. It was just the aesthetic of the time.

No, actually Sakraida82 is correct, she ate lots of sweets, and they didn't have proper oral techniques back then, so her teeth were rotten.

This work is truly beautiful, and it's really reconstructing the mood of good old fine art piece. I would like to download a WIP which is linked in description but I wonder if there is something wrong with my computer or it simply doesn't work (I mean, the link to the file not just for blog). If someone could send me working link or file I'd be grateful.

Nicely done! Back in those days pirates from all over seafaring Europe were engaged in piracy against the Spanish Empire, including Sir Francis Drake. Much of the fantastic Aztec art that Montezuma gave to Cortez survived because it was captured by an aristocratic French pirate.

Pleasant. Sr. Francis Drake was both pirate and explorer. Back in those days piracy was considered a legitimate enterprise, unless of coarse you got caught.

The thin line was a license from a government saying it was okay to attack a certain enemy.

Eidolon1 In reply to tmpfan [2012-02-06 01:42:07 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes! back in those days people often took action on their own and governments had less control over the actions of their people than they have today.

Love love LOVE this! Seriously considering buying this from your etsy...even though I'm poor lol.
You do beautiful work, so whimsical and fantastic. I love the detail you've put into it, especially in her features, and the way the waves blend into her skirts. The curtains are excuisite (I tried spelling that word about five different ways and then gave up lol sorry) and almost look like a photograph. Definitely a fan.
If I were to offer any critique, I'd say that the neckline of her gown seems a little...rigid? Compared to the warmth and depth you've put into the rest of her skin, her chest seems a little flat and 2D. Just MHO.
Overall, though, this is just gorgeous and a fantastic piece of work. Really excellent!

I like your concept with this (having the ship to symbolize her involvement with all of that). The symbolism really makes it feel like the sort of portrait that could have actually been painted during her lifetime (or in the time immediately afterwards), sort of like this one: [link]
Nice work!
