Description Hehe, once again a speedpainting turned into something more.....but it took way too long, I didn't get to work on it lately, because school and other things were sort of eating up my time, but now I am finally done. and I think I am quite satisfied with it, got a decent amount of detail into this and quite enjoyed the painting process. except for the bridge. and the stairs. oh, the rocks were quite an effort, too. and the....

Very cool. I love the atamosphere, the colors are very nice, the light against dark. I don't know if it has anything to do with Middle Earth, but it sort of has that Middle Earth kind of intrigue and personality.

I guess if I had any criticism, it would be the placement of the waterfall ... all the focal points kind of line up vertically. I'd put it over on the left side of the image. It's not a big problem, but if there is anything to be improved, it wouuld be that.

memod In reply to SirGrunt [2007-03-29 02:11:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I quite agree, I noticed that too, about a day after I had finished it. everything is on one line. too bad I didn't notice it earlier.
Thanks anyway, I'm glad that you enjoyed it, even though I didn't really think about middle earth when painting this

OH WOW. This came out SO well. I love the ambient light of the background. It gives the impression of a larger forest beyond what we are seeing and thus the whole building suddenly gets a much more secluded and secretive feel. I think the water came out excellent and you did SO good with those trees. I am immensely pleased that you took the time to turn this from a speed painting into a full work and I think the effort has paid off in spades. I certainly see this as one of the best things I've ever seen you do. It is stunning.

Wow, been a long time. Sorry that I didn't get to this when I wanted to, I just got back from my Spring Break in Arizona. So anyways, glad to see that you haven't just been frittering away your time, as the case may be. So, I'm happy to see a new piece, and will do the best to give it one of those Advanced Critique you love so much.

First of all, the only real issue that I have with this piece is the water. For some reason, it just doesn't seem to have the same movement and life that the water in some of your other, earlier pictures had, especially around the small waterfall. Underneath the bridge and around the bend, it's pretty good, but I feel that it could still use a little bit of work.

Other than that, the rest of the picture is absolutely fantastic. The lighting is wonderful, giving a great sense of surrealism and an element of the fantastic to the picture that would have otherwise been missing. The rocks are great too, coming from the Grand Canyon has given me a unique perspective on rocks, and these really do a good job of capturing the feel that rocks should have. The bridge is great, and the sense of loneliness that you capture in the lone sentry is very well done, extremely poignant.

I love the trees, and the way that the light catches on the leaves and branches. It really looks fantastic, with an extraordinary sense of nature on the edge of humanity. The ruins add to this sensation well.

All in all, I would say that this is a wonderful picture, definitely up to par with your better works. There's room for improvement, naturally, but there's alway such room. Keep up the good work.

Agh, one thing that I wanted to mention, and completely forgot to, is the stone wall and the steps on the far right of the picture. You really have a unique perspective when it comes to architecture. Very well designed, it has a great old feel of a rich society that had way too much money to burn, that they could afford to waste money like that on a simple outpost. In addition, the glowing red eyes on the sentry are a fantastic touch as well. Again, very well done.

On a happy note, once I have some money, and maybe a paypal account, I'll start looking into buying some of your art. Your stuff would look fantastic on the wall of my apartment. Very fantasy oriented, my place. Your art is wonderful.

Anyways, that's my pathetic little stump for your work. I was actually thinking about interviewing you in the future, to get some of your opinions for my journalism class, and maybe the university newspaper. If I ever get around to not being lazy, I'll note you with some details as to how to go about that. Naturally, if you don't mind, of course. Well done, once again, and I can't wait to see what you come out with next.

memod In reply to gaelic [2007-03-28 13:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for your view on this I think the reason why the water might not look as lifely to you in this case is, that this setting doesn't really allow for as much of a reflection as the waterscapes in my other pieces. but here the water is just too busy for that, so I only indicated a reflection of the bridge and of the surrounding colours.

But yes, I am quite happy with this piece now, even though it has a few mistakes and weak points. I think it turned out quite well

Hey, if you want to buy some prints and they are larger ones, note me first, perhaps I can give you a few dollars discount!

And no, I don't mind an interview

Thanks again!
Daniel
