Description
Voila, a new matte painting. I am really having a lot of fun with those, and since so many of you liked my Remnants of the past , I figured I'd make another one. Actually this started out as a practice, as so many of my pieces, but then I decided to take it further, and I quite like the result. However, please do yourself a favour, and, if you somehow can, watch this against a dark background, dim the lights or whatever. the bright background of dA just doesn't do it justice, it makes it look too dark and the details really suffer.
Unlike Remnants of the past this one is mostly painted, aside from one subtle texture, THIS is the only stock photo that I used in this piece, the rest is entirely painted.
Okay, enough talk, I hope you enjoy it, print will be up soon, as usual, and now tell me what you think!
Daniel
Since many people were asking me what a matte painting is, it's basically a mix of (digital) painting and photomanipulation, used to create a photorealistic environment in films or games, which is then often combined with some subtle animation and filmed material from the set.

Very interesting piece.
First off, I love the sense of depth that you create in this image by placing another rift in the earth far behind the church, in the extreme back of the image. It helps to lend a sense of inevitability to the picture. Almost as though, were there any people in the church, there would be no place left for them to run.
In addition, I love the contrast created between the soft blue/white light of the moon and the fiery yellow coming out of the ground. As in the above comment, it makes it clear that the only way out is up.
A few minor suggestions that I would like to make,
First, it seems that the area of land directly behind the church are too clear. The "safe" area behind the church is wide enough that it lessens the effect of seeing the rift closing in on the church. It makes me feel as though while there is no ultimate hope of escape, there is the possibility of delaying the inevitable, something that I don't feel goes well with this picture.
Second, I feel that while this picture is pretty near perfect, the only way that it could be improved would be to have the rift traveling through the small graveyard that I always picture a church like this having. It would help to make the viewer feel as though nothing, not even the dead, can be safe from this event.
Other than that, this is a remarkable peice. Very nice indeed.

whoa, critique is not dead!
I'm really really thankful for your in-depth critique on my pieces and I quite agree with your suggestions, actually. While working on this piece I was afraid of overloading the image with rifts and kinda making them less 'special', but I do see what you mean with the safe area behind the monastery.
and true, it might have been interesting to put a rift through the graveyard, although I'm afraid that this might harm the composition abit, either leading the eye out of the right of the image, or moving it around the monastery on the left...while the focus is the gate. But still, this idea has something to it...
Thanks again, I'm glad to see that there are still people who take the time to write down all their thoughts on a piece!
Daniel

no problem. One of the greatest injustices that is done on deviantart is the one line comment. I think it's the duty of the viewer to give as good a critique as they can.
In fact, you could make the case that the critique is as much an art form as the picture being critiqued.

Great work mate!
The lighting inside the ruins is very realistic and natural. Yet it is the plains outside that I think are a bit "plain"... I really liked how the cracks were placed yet I feel like they need a bit more depth to them. I think what's bothering me is that there is so much fog in the scene, yet the lava isn't "lighting" the fog right where the cracks are...
Anyhow, that's my little constructive criticism there
Great work! And keep it coming!

memod In reply to the-panther [2006-10-15 13:38:13 +0000 UTC]
hey, sorry for the late reply! and thanks a lot for this detailed comment
you are quite right, the area around the monastery indeed seems a bit plain, seems to be something I have issues with. I need to stop thinking of the ground as a plain, but try to break it up more. and yeah, the cracks aren't really all that good either, I'll have to find a way to make them better next time
as for the lava lighting the fog however...that won't happen, since, due to the heat there is no fog where the lava is which is why I kept the fog for the more distant parts in the image

No worries mate It's a pleasure to be commenting on your work again ^^
On the lava lighting the fog I believe you got me there... I never thought of that physical phenomenon, that might just be right! Well after all how many times in a lifetime do you actually get the chance to see lava and fog together
All in all great work mate! Looking forward to your next projects!

it's okay I can imagine that one does not walk past by lava and fog all too often
hope you have a great day!
