Description Voila, a new matte painting. I am really having a lot of fun with those, and since so many of you liked my Remnants of the past , I figured I'd make another one. Actually this started out as a practice, as so many of my pieces, but then I decided to take it further, and I quite like the result.
However, please do yourself a favour, and, if you somehow can, watch this against a dark background, dim the lights or whatever. the bright background of dA just doesn't do it justice, it makes it look too dark and the details really suffer.

Unlike Remnants of the past this one is mostly painted, aside from one subtle texture, THIS is the only stock photo that I used in this piece, the rest is entirely painted.

Okay, enough talk, I hope you enjoy it, print will be up soon, as usual, and now tell me what you think!

Daniel

Since many people were asking me what a matte painting is, it's basically a mix of (digital) painting and photomanipulation, used to create a photorealistic environment in films or games, which is then often combined with some subtle animation and filmed material from the set.

This is fantastic! Thanks for the definition of a matte painting...I would have never known
The only part that kind of bothers me is the flames behind the background mountains...they make the mountains seem a little flat....but I love the textures in the foreground and the glow of the burning castle...really great detail work there

Sorry for this horribly late reply, but thanks for your detailed comment! I'm glad you liked this, and that my definition of matte painting helped you a little
And thanks for the critique too, even though I am afraid that I disagree on that I rather think the distant flames add to the depth

Thanks anyway, and have a great day!

Great peice as always. I would give this a full on critique but I read all of the stuff that said and I simply am left saying "Yeah, I agree". I don't honestly have anything to add that her well thought out and very in depth critique did not touch on. This is a fantastic peice and I am really very excited about where your art is going. When looking at some of the things you've done before and comparing them with your most recent works, I'm just floored at how quickly you seem to be learning and growing. It's WONDERFUL.

memod In reply to warnis [2006-10-15 15:54:15 +0000 UTC]

actually I have blurred it a bit in the end, because I wanted to mimick this blurring of hot air that you have above warm places.
but thanks anyway!

warnis In reply to memod [2006-10-16 08:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh, ok. I just had another look at it, and I must say that you did an excellent job with the detail on the mist and the lightning on the trees and the ruin. The only thing that really bothers me (very little) is the fire from the crack in the middle, I feel as if the fire would spread to the edges of it.

I think I'll have to fav this!

anyway, will net zu viel dumm rumlabern keep it up!

danke dir!

Dan,

The colors you added from the last time I saw this really work. It's subtle and still feels like moonlight, but the green on the foreground really helps the transition from the very-very cool blues to the bright oranges and yellows you have for the fire.

The beams of moonlight you added are just the right touch, but maybe try variating the width of the beams and also adding some more subtle ones behind the layer you have now to make the image have more visual space.

Also the angle on the left-most beam seems like it should be just slightly more vertical of an angle than the other ones, even if it might not be correct real-world wise, right now it's a visual situation where the moon looks like it's coming almost directly from the top left, when it would be higher up in space. Sometimes we have to resort to visual tricks, hehe!

Also, the one set of trees in the foreground which have a crack (visually not spatially) right above them seem to me to be flattening out the image. If you added a few irregular branches which stick up and overlap the two elements, it would spatially solve that issue.

The rest of the things you added... the little trees in the background... is perfectly placed, and the mist coming in front of the monastary is really spot-on.

This is amazing, dancakes. One of your most moody and atmospheric paintings, and I could really see this as a matte for a movie. I think with maybe a few of these slight changes it'd set it off and make it even more exceptional than it already is.

Also, good choice with the wide black border - it helps a lot. I have the lights off, and for me it looks great. I still took a moment and set it as a wallpaper with a black background for the rest of the screen, and it works really well. I'm so proud of you!

I didn't know that about matte paintings. Now that I do, I'm even more awestruck. It doesn't LOOK like that's what you did. It all just goes together perfectly.

You're incredibly talented. You know that, right?
