Description
A walk through bluebell woods at their peak is one of the natural highlights of the English spring, and while they've been a little late blooming this year, they finally seem to have found their stride.I spent a good portion of last Sunday exploring some local woods and while I still haven't quite found the shot I'm after I really enjoyed the serenity of being immersed in the forest. I still like this one though so thought I'd post it up
It was so humid that afternoon I had to keep sharing my water with the dog to make sure she was ok.... it was a very peaceful outing apart from her occasional interruptions to "buzz" passers-by and bark at random trees!
Back to the woods this weekend....

Very nice shot of the undergrowth yet it looks like there is a veil on the image. The colours seem a bit passed-out, just like if there was a white transparent layer above the image.

Lovely mate. It is a lovely sight isn't it. It's on my list of things to photograph too. I read in BBC wildlife mag that this bloom has become widespread only since the wild Boar was wiped out across Britain, and when they were commonplace they would have hoovered up most of the bulbs before they had a chance to create these 'carpets'. Now that Wild Boar (Feral from farms) have been seen and are known to be breeding in many woods throughout the UK this landscape could become rarer.

Fascinating, I never knew that... almost makes me wonder how many other spectacles would suddenly pop up if we all weren't around!

They really look better as a bunch than when shot close-up. xD

I agree, their main appeal comes with large numbers.

Amazing lush colours here! Nice composition too with the large trunk on the left and sea of blue in the foreground.

I love the effect

Thanks! I use a pretty full-on sharpening method after resize then tone it right back until it sits comfortably with my eye

can you give me some details?(maybe a personal note if you don't want everybody to know how it works)
I definitely don't wan't to copy your style, but I'm very interested in what you do precisely.
what do you mean by tone it right back?

Meowgli In reply to CanonBallFoto [2010-05-22 21:40:54 +0000 UTC]
By toning it right back what I mean is the action tends to oversharpen the image, I then reduce the opacity of the layer(s) until I get the look I'm after.
Phil did a journal a while back posting a fine looking sharpening action, which you can find here: [link] ... I personally haven't used it, though I am familiar with varations of it and he seems to have put a good deal of thought into it... he knows his shit anyway! The one I use is kind of a variation on it.
Of course to get the most out of sharpening/detail, you should be using appropriate apertures and always shooting on a tripod... for this image I also used live view and the depth of field preview button to make sure I had as much sharp as possible while avoiding having to stop all the way down to diffaction-causing apertures like f/22.... I think this one was shot around f/11 if you were wondering.
Hope that helps!

I like your attitude to go untill you find a best picture material. Wonderful to see a forest and flowers live together like good neighbours.

In my experience the more time spent in the field, the better the selection of images to choose from at the end Cheers Tunde

I love both the flowers and the woods. Compositionally speaking, this shot might've been better with the flowers taking up 2/3 of the bottom and only 1/3 for the woods, but I'm not sure....all I keep thinking about is just wanting to be there so maybe it's just perfect the way it is.

Thanks Paula, yeah this is something my mum has been saying to me too.. reckons I'm too interested in the trees when people just want to see lots and lots of blue! I shot a number of compositions like how you suggest but to my eye the trees kinda give it structure and purpose to the composition.... could just be me though, and I'll be sure to keep practising some more shots with bluebells as the main focus

Wow, very impressive and vivid colours, magenta and green is a very relaxing combination, I think.
What are your aims for the shot you are after?
Do you already have it in your mind, how it should look like?

Meowgli In reply to Thinking-Silence [2010-05-22 12:03:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Yeah I have a good idea... it requires backlighting, a certain arrangement of trees, and an area very lush in bluebells... maybe I'll find it this weekend!
