Description The Swoose, 40-3097 is the oldest extant B-17D. It was on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The Swoose made a reconnaissance flight that day and flew one of the United States' first bombing missions during the war in the Pacific.

During July 2008, "The Swoose" was moved from National Air & Space Museum Paul Garber Facility to the USAF Museum, arriving on July 14, 2008. Visitors may see "The Swoose" in the museum's restoration facility.

This piece was created in Illustrator CS and is entirely vector.

Commanded by Colonel Frank Kurtz, the most highly decorated US Army Air Force pilot of WW2, and father of actress Swoosie Kurtz.

I actually work in an antique store that has a nice collection of his service with documents and photos (with wedding photos).

You certainly have an eye for the more unusual aircraft of WW II.

Waiting for Pink Spitfires next.

Thanks for the comment, a pink Spitfire may be awhile in coming.

I am thinking Moranes or Nakijima next.

Ironically, I just finished a very overdue research paper on the developmental history of the B-17. I never knew any of the "D"s survived the war, I know the "C"s were used as test beds until 1946, but I never knew any of the "D"s survived let alone still exist, I don't think any of the "C"s still exist today, maybe.

The only "C" i know of is a wreck in the California Sierras, which has been picked over pretty thorough.
