Now that you gotten the functionality of the upper body figured out, I think you should work on the lower portion. For instance, I think that the weight on standard human legs is too much now and they would not be able to support a standing position for very long. I'm not really sure of how to actually go about that, but I think the feet should be at least a bit wider.

Awesome job!

Yes, I'm having some trouble figuring out what to do with the lower body too. On my character design, I did give him shorter legs and longer/wider feet in hopes that would make sense to reduce drag and also to help support his body. I was considering putting his design on this reference, but wanted to keep things simple. But yeah, no way can they have normal leg proportions.

Usually if I were to get into such technical functionality in an organic design, I look at both skeletons and try to see where strain is going to be put. Especially the weight strain. Then I'd test to see if there was any sort of collisions with certain bones, like the shoulder blades. If there wasn't any collisions, then I'd add the organs, the muscle and so on until the creature is complete.

For your design, I'd look at the pelvic region and see how the skeletal structure supports all the weight above and below. I'd look at whatever bird/flying-thing you had combined him with and see how that creature dealt with its own weight and functionality. Then after comparing, make a hybrid of the skeletal structure and so on.

Not sure if my process would help you though.

Your process actually makes sense xD normally i start with a character design then work backwards, developing the muscle and skeletal structures last

I will definitely do more research on this topic eventually, this isn't over for me by a long shot xD

The concept looks great and believable
I admit I cheat a bit on the bone and muscle structure myself (but having seraphim with several pairs of limbs strains the willing suspension of disbelief enough to allow that, I guess), so I'm going more for body language, culture (architecture, clothing, belief, science...) and stuff like that.

Anyway, I love his back

With seraphim and things with excessive amounts of extra limbs I can see why you would throw away anatomy, but you can get away with it because they are supposed to be "celestial beings". I would actually like to see someone somehow tackling attaching like 4 sets of wings to the human body with muscle and bone and stuff xD As far as character design and stuff, I think it's okay to cheat a little bit, maybe not have all the muscles you should, but I think it's important to understand what's underneath the skin as well. Thank you for the comment!

My opinion as well... I love to study and use bird and bat anatomy, but I cheat out on some things (my seraphim aren't really celestial, more an abomination of nature, while the cherubim are supposed to look as human as possible while behaving inhuamly)
Though I love to see it used the way you do it... great work

mernolan In reply to Esktasy [2010-11-03 23:15:56 +0000 UTC]

Ah well, maybe you can do some sort of variation where the wings are kinda deformed and small? Maybe your seraphim and cherubim use magic to fly around or something xD

thanks again c:

Esktasy In reply to mernolan [2010-11-05 13:22:14 +0000 UTC]

But I like large wings XD (They are more gliders, I guess... they are running around a lot before taking off... and landing...)
Magic is... I don't know. Just doesn't fit, with the machine guns, tanks and stuff.

This a really interesting way of attaching wings to the human body! Great concept! It looks great in use also which is something I love seeing when you illustrate Hans
I dont know how much further you'll be going with this but I've recently been looking into the same sort of thing and am wondering if you'll be adding a keeled sternum or uncinate process? Without the uncinate process alot of strength is lost in regards the ribcage, that process also helps to restrict the movement of vertebrae so its quite important. Birds also have a coracoid bone which supports the muscle that pulls the wing back up in flight, but it looks as though you've taken on a more bat/petrosaur muscle structure which is really nice to see <: 3 Blargh I'll leave you alone now, I'm just really interested in seeing this as I've always slapped the arms above the wing attachements xD

mernolan In reply to Rasa88 [2010-10-28 21:00:09 +0000 UTC]

I think I will eventually, but I kinda pulled this together for myself and I'm somewhat satisfied with how it looks and might function, but I will definitely research more in the future. I really don't like it when people just stick wings on willy nilly without thinking through first how and what the function of the wings are going to be. :c
I will look more into what you mentioned at some point in the future, or maybe explore the other theories out there about attaching wings

You know, I really like this. I love seeing something as farfetched as wings on a human form made more practical <3 It's something that always bothered me in the fantasy world and I wish more people addressed it.

mernolan In reply to Tihmiishu [2010-10-28 21:01:15 +0000 UTC]

yes i totally agree, ESPECIALLY when those same people claim that their characters can fly perfectly fine as well.
