Description Part I |Part II |Part III |Part IV

EDIT 2013: KEEPING THESE THINGS UPDATED IS QUITE A CHORE but I've long since done other studies since 2011
mernolan.tumblr.com/post/53441…
24.media.tumblr.com/43808b5b87…

So, the other three parts were BASICALLY centered around Hans' anatomy cB
but I did want to show something where all that information applies

I'm chill with you using the other information, but DO NOT steal these character designs

OMG THANK YOU. I have been trying SO HARD to find something like this to help me with wing designs! You'd be surprised at how few there are that give various other positions, and different wing types!

In your opinion, is it possible to create human birdwings irl (like this guy tried- www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYW5G2… )? Using some kind of mechanism that can work as the pectoral (for strength), and a steering mechanism like a tail that could even support the legs? It's kind of weird topic to talk about, but it has always been my dream to try to construct functional wings that you can take on and off. Then there would have to be a lightweight and sturdy material for bones/carcass,  + "muscles", and wing membranes. I'll have to dig further into physics, anatomy, mechanics and animatronics for that I guess XP Thank you for these guides btw, they're very nicely done

you are amazing!! You're tutorials are the best so far. Please keep updating!

Also, could you somehow do a more detailed version for when the wings are folded?

I was hoping it could be more wrapped around the body (but idk if this is possible >< )

I just have a general question: Would adding a tail help at all with lifting legs in flight and therefore reducing drag, or would that not effect anything?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mernolan In reply to amadshad3 [2013-07-31 12:31:36 +0000 UTC]

PROBABLY. Depending on the length/weight of the legs, it might not actually do much in the way of preventing the legs from dangling, but it'll make the body more parallel to the ground, which is what you want.

I did things the hard way and DIDN'T add a tail/rudder in these examples because I wanted to draw attention to the logistics of flight

This is super super super helpful. I'm taking Biology right now & I've always had an idea for a bird-like humanoid species, so trying to create a somewhat logical one was going to be so complicated if I didn't see this.

Super light weight bones would also be a must, our regular bones would be way too heavy for flight.

Thank you so much for making these!

I actually give my wing-people tail feathers that they steer by lowering and raising each leg. They also have muscles in their back and butt for aid in turning it.

This looks...amazingly helpful. This is something I've been interested in for a while, so it's good to see someone actually dealing with the realities of humanoid wings. Out of curiosity, do you think that a human designed along these lines could hide their wings, or would they be too large for that (if the person in question was flight capable)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mernolan In reply to Feyoran [2012-03-02 00:49:20 +0000 UTC]

I would say that some who is flight capable would have a very hard time hiding their wings, but i would also say that it would depend on the type of wing - bat-like wings are more flexible than say feathers and you might be able to get away with hiding everything below the wrist, but then there's the arm part that still has to be dealt with. What are the circumstances, would you hide them completely and make it a hassle to 'undress' to fly or just trying to make them less obvious? If I ever update this, I hope to include some notes on fashion for wings and the like

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Feyoran In reply to mernolan [2012-03-02 01:26:26 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, I was thinking of trying to make them as subtle as possible. The main reason was because I was thinking of a world where having a lot of wing visible would be sort of a faux pas, a showoffish thing, and the citizens are generally expected to keep them as folded in as much as possible. The main character wears a capey thing to hide them almost entirely, with only the sides visible, but his wings are on the larger side. I could imagine it as a matter of practicality, especially when in public. It'd probably be really annoying to have to hide them all the time, though. It'd be hard to hide them under clothes, probably hard to keep them folded in tightly all day...eh, there's just a lot of questions to go with it. But I'd love to see wing fashion! Wonder if specialty shops would spring up based on wing accessories or some such...hmm...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mernolan In reply to Feyoran [2012-03-02 02:33:45 +0000 UTC]

If modesty is what you want, and its common place to have wings in your world, then something that is 'fashionable' and functional would be logical, like a shawl or capey as you mentioned, something that drapes over the shoulders and wings, but wouldn't make it difficult to fly. Successfully hiding them under shirts is impractical, because the wing size we are talking about are way too large for that.

Dressing them in layers is your best bet for modesty and function. I believe most wings would require and open back, so that alone brings up winter fashion. With feather wings, the clothing can taper around the base of the wings because its all just a lot of feathers, membrane wings however would attach to the back/hip/legs etc and wouldn't allow for any back to an article of clothing and maybe even affect leg wear.

hope that helps I'm happy to help if you have more questions

Wow, this will sure be helpfull for me since the characters in the story are winged humans to. Are you going to do the same thing for female winged humanoids ? Cause the main characters in my story are girls.

men and women are more or less structurally the same except that men are obviously bigger than women and the difference in the pelvic bone [link] men and women have all the same muscles too, just in varying degree, and women pectorals are covered up in some degree by breasts.
