Description
More of a challenge to myself than an art project. I wanted to see if I could turn a thin bowl that had many many flaws. It was a success but I dunno who might want to buy itRelated content

I'm not so sure they are fickle but they all have different tastes and I hope to cater to all of them.

It looks like you left some gouge marks opposite the knot-hole. Were you going fast enough?

Yup, there are some marks there. I suppose I could have sanded them out but the piece has some ugly cracks (sealed with CA) that will keep it from being anything of value. As for the speed I'm not sure what works best when working with a void. For most bowls I have the best luck on the lowest setting. I also was afraid of spinning it too fast for fear of it breaking up.
Side note: I stopped by the nearest woodcraft the other day and saw my dream lathe in person. 16x24 Nova, 1-1/2 HP...really heavy and solid...drool If I had 12 hundred bucks floating around I would have picked it up. It has a simple belt system that requires manual speed changes but is VERY quick.

For 'square' bowls, I know that many turners prefer to work at speeds over 3000 rpm - makes the outboard space irrelevant. But with such an unbalanced piece, I'm not sure it's entirely a good idea.
I personally have no experience with the Nova brand lathes, but sixteen inches sounds like it'll do you good. I personally would like one of the solid cast iron bed large jet lathes - two pulley positions with an electric speed control and electric speedometer...ooh I could waste hours staring at someone demonstrating from those. (And who couldn't use another couple of thousand dollars?)

JET has some good stuff. Were you able to buy the lathe you were interested in? It looked like a fine machine.

Not yet. In fact, I put off buying a new lathe for now because I have been hearing more mild reviews of JET, and the lathe I have now is gathering dust while I pump out more cost-effective works for an upcoming craft show.

I recently was at a woodcraft showroom and was able to compare the JET with a comparable Nova lathe. The Nova was a bit more but it seemed to be a much better value. I've read reviews and heard the same. The guy at the store said he owned one and it is by far the best lathe for the price. He wasn't too fond of JET either.
I hope the craft show goes well!

Must have been hairy as the chisel crossed the void. Nice job, would make a nice little coin or key bowl on someones bedside table

It was a little hairy but I was shaving off tiny bits. I'm sure it will sell but it has too many imperfections to yield any serious coin
